Capt. Nathan Mayer is a great example of "be careful what you wish for."

During a violent storm, while quite inebriated from the ship's ale supply, the Captain started screaming into the storm like a madman. The crew could barely understand what he was saying over the wind and thunder (his slurred speech didn't help either). One thing rang out clear and true though. "You call this a storm! I could do better than this!"

A sudden and eerie calm came about the storm followed by a deep, booming voice say, "SO MOTE IT BE!" followed by a giant bolt of lightning striking the Captain.

The next thing he knew was washing up on a beach, his clothing torn and burnt but his skin unblemished. The next few days were rough on the Captain as he came to grips with the fact that he had somehow become some kind of avatar for the Storm. It would take decades to learn to control his newfound powers but time seemed to be something he now had plenty of as he no longer ages.

While thoroughly enjoying his power, being forced to watch his friends and loved ones die of sickness and age took it's toll on the Captain. He now considers his powers more curse than blessing and now uses his powers to fight evil and right wrongs in hopes of balancing out his misdeeds and eventually earning the right to pass on to the next adventure and, hopefully, see his friends and family again.
