CHILDHOOD
Jabari was born in 1846 on a small cotton plantation in South Carolina. Him and his parents were slaves, and despite being raised in a very hostile environment he grew up to be a healthy child. At 13 years of age he received his first flogging after being wrongly accused of taking fruit from a tree and eating it. The overseer whipped Jabari badly, and he was then left in the slave-house to recover or die. Miraculously his wounds had healed by the next day, but his parents had him pretend to be hurt for weeks to avert attention. It was also during this time his parents realized Jabari had never been sick and when injured healed quickly with no scars. Fearing that this trait would get him sold, they had Jabari stay close to them in the fields (where they all picked cotton) so that they could watch over him and keep his ability secret.

However when Jabari was 15 years of age the slave-owner became sick and died; and his widow attempted to sell Jabari to cover the medical expenses. Jabari's father begged the buyer for his son not to be taken, but was struck in the back, mocked, and beaten by the overseer. Jabari's hands were then bound together with rope and tied to the end of the buyer's saddle. As the buyer began to ride off with Jabari he cried and tried to resist, but was unable to stop the horse. His mother desperately ran in front of the man's path and begged for him not to take her son, but received a hard boot to the face instead. As she laid motionless of the ground Jabari's adrenaline peaked and he managed to free one of his hands, with it he quickly freed the other by cutting the rope with claws that had emerged from his hand and ran back to comfort his mom.

The buyer, who had not noticed how Jabari freed himself, got off the horse and slowly approached the mother and child. He pulled out his pistol and angrily said, "I'ma gonna give ya to tha count of three to come with me boy or I'ma gonna put a bullet in ya worthless nigger mother and drag ya back!..... One..... Two....." But before he could count to three Jabari's head turned towards him revealing an enraged expression and he pounced on the man, savagely tearing into him with his newfound claws. The overseer quickly rushed to the two with a club in his hand and attempted to bash Jabari's skull in, but Jabari pounced on him too and tore him to shreds. As everyone stood there stunned, the widow suddenly ran off screaming. Jabari, covered in blood began to calm down and his parents cautiously approached him. Knowing what he had done would result in execution they quickly scrambled to change and wash him before fleeing to the North with whomever else would come.

Along the way it was discovered Jabari also had heightened senses, which helped the runaways avoid capture. They traveled for many grueling weeks before making it to Indiana. However the North was unwilling to take in a wanted fugitive, or his family, unless Jabari joined the Union Army and helped defeat the Confederates. With no other choices available Jabari agreed, gaining the surname Freeman as a result.

AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
While serving in the Union Army during the war Jabari received a monthly stipend, but he would mail most of it to his parents; only keeping what he needed for food and necessities. He began in the 1st South Carolina Volunteer regiment, performing strenuous labor, but later would be transferred to the 54th Massachusetts Infantry after that regiment suffered heavy losses assaulting Fort Wagner. As part of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry he participated in several skirmishes and battles. Although poorly trained and equipped, Jabari still managed to defeat many Confederate soldiers.

LIFE AFTER THE CIVIL WAR
After the war, Jabari served for another two years before returning home. He joined his father working on the railroads and his mother worked as a housekeeper. Although all free, it was still a very hostile country and Blacks had to be careful since they were not yet equal.
