The Fair Folk sometimes steal human children away, leaving behind a changeling. Often this changeling is simply an enchanted piece of wood (called a fetch or stock) that appears to wither and die. Other times, though, a fae is left instead. This fae could be a faerie infant or child or it could be a faerie elder who has been rewarded with a life of simple comfort among the humans. The stolen child is also sometimes referred to as a changeling.

Due to the Ban and the resulting rift between the Land of Legends and Earth, changelings were exchanged far less often and became the subject of tales and folklore. With the recent weakening of the ban, changelings have been exchanged at a more frequent rate, but still remain rare. It is possible that many who believe themselves to be mutants are in fact changelings, but the general disbelief in magic makes the clarification difficult.
