((SERIOUS work in progress. Sorry it doesn't look too good.))

The DMI-000P Protectoid was an entry into a top-secret military contract for various companies to create robotic soldiers to fight future wars, saving more human lives. One such experiment at Defensive Mechanics Industries would have been considered a success if not for one thing: the prototype was implanted with an artificial intelligence circuit (designed to give it self-awareness, a personality, and a conscience) from the lead designer in secret because he didn't want his creation to become a mindless engine of destruction. When the prototypes from each company, including DMI, were ready, they were presented to the public at the Expo in a poll to see which robot model would best defend their future. However, during a freak power outage, the other robots suffered a glitch, went berserk, and began opening fire at the terrified crowd. The Protectoid sprang into action and fought off and destroyed the other robots to buy time for the visitors to escape, but was unable to prevent them from killing a quarter of the visiting population. This incident became known as the Expo tragedy. He was soon declared a hero after several witness testimonies when local police investigated the scene. He has since been trying to make up for his failure to protect the remaining quarter by becoming a government-sponsored superhero.

Theme Music: "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa

Hooks:

1. Is your character in the military? He will be happy to discuss matters with a fellow soldier. The Protectoid is very much used to a formal command structure and feels most at home around soldiers.

2. The Protectoid is still learning about humanity, and some social situations can end up getting pretty awkward.

3. He has a very serious personality, in and out of the battlefield.

4. Is your character synthetic in nature and has devoted "his/her" time to the defense of humankind? Congratulations! You just found a kindred spirit!
