Background

Christopher Blake lived with his father, a shipyard worker in Textile City in the crime-filled neighborhood known as, Purgatory. Purgatory got its name simply due to the amounts of crime made the neighborhood a living hell and people casually suffered as it also wasn't uncommon for innocent people to go missing or even turn up dead for no good amount of reason. Christopher was told by his father time-after-time again to do well in school and to not end up like him as a pathetic shipyard worker as the job didn't pay well and it barely put enough food on the table or clothes on their backs. As a casual pastime Christopher liked to sit on the fire escape of his apartment and glare at the stars and occasionally overlooked the streets as police cars would zoom down the street with sirens blaring, chasing after the usual fleeing criminals that existed in the neighborhood known as, Purgatory.
Concept reference of Textile City
Purgatory (yellow) in the Textile City map

Christopher, at around six or nine years old, one day after school decided to go to his dad's work after school the day before Father's Day and decided to give him his gift early. The gift was the typical coffee mug that read "World Greatest Dad" that was created in art class. But while transporting the gift to his dad, a worker who apparently lost control of the forklift he was operating crashed into a fuel tank and Christopher, who was too stunned by what he saw wasn't quick enough to avoid the explosion that would later ensue and Christopher would later be permanently blinded. Whereas most people felt sympathy towards Christopher for losing his sight, the explosion awoke Christopher's 'metagene' and gained an enhancement in all his human senses as well as balance. Christopher could now hear, smell, and taste better than a normal human.

Elsewhere Christopher's dad, Isiah Blake, sought out a notorious crime family who ran operations in and out of Purgatory, this was the Kenji Crime Family. Isaiah overheard they practiced in ancient mystical practices that could heal the human body in many ways, even bring the dead back to life and Isiah wanted to talk to the head of the Kenji Crime Family and hope that he could use his 'connections' to the dark arts to heal and repair Christopher's blindness. This apparently didn't sit well with Tao Kenji, the head of the Kenji Crime Family and had Isiah killed for s, this later resulted in Christopher have to put in multiple different foster homes until he finally escaped and lived on the streets and learned how to hone his enhanced senses to the point of where he had the ears of a owl and could he the smallest conversation from miles away. This eventually led to Christopher becoming a casual church-goer, he never really entered the church but instead used his enhanced sense of hearing to listen to the preaches from across the street on a rooftop. Christopher would make this a casual thing until he became a devout Christian and favored sitting outside the church looking up to gargoyles that surrounded the church walls, forming a connection with it. Little would Christopher know that the gargoyle's symbolism would later play an important role in the man he would later become during the next coming years.

Origins

When Chris was in his early twenties he attended Americus University, Textile City's most prestigious university. By this point Chris was living with Father Bishop, the preacher at the church Chris frequently visited when he was still a child. Father Bishop adopted Chris at age 10 and taught him right from wrong and to always be a better than average when it comes to the obstacles life throws at you in the long run. While attending Americus University Chris majored in psychology and had a brief romantic fling with a Chinese girl he met in German class before she mysteriously stopped coming to school and then this led to Chris meeting his best friend, Brian Meech. Brian and Chris graduated top of their class after attending Americus University and looked throughout Textile City to find a new place of employment and found themselves interning at a psychology office.

Chris and Brian stopped interning at the psychology office after 3 months and returned back to Purgatory. They bought out a small office space of their own where Chris and Brian operated out of two separate offices in the building and operated as licensed psychiatrists. Eventually they would meet their future secretary/friend Tracy Grant, a distraught young woman who witnessed a crime she couldn't unsee and was living in a state of paranoia and fear that if theses people ever found out about her she could possibly lose her life and never be heard from again. It would later be found out that this group was controlled by the man known only as Father Don and he was the most feared man in all of Purgatory he even gained the nickname, 'The Devil of Purgatory'. The trauma Tracy was going through awoke an anger and hatred Chris had never felt before, it angered him to the point of that it felt like he HAD to do something as the police were of no help due to that there was not enough evidence to really kick off an investigation of any kind.

Chris decided to put his 'gifts' to use one night and go out and truly test how 'superhuman' he really was. Throwing on a makeshift costume put together from household items, Chris spent the whole night out beating up thugs left and right and leaving them for the police. This later awoke a great fear into the people across Purgatory as they all thought another crime family was making their debut in Purgatory and was now targeting innocent people just for the sake of gaining a reputation, when really it was mild-mannered Christopher Blake taking to the streets of Purgatory as the vigilante Purgatory needed. Chris had only one goal in mind and that was to right the wrongs these many crime families had made since their first appearances.

Becoming a Vigilante

Motivated by the psychological torment Tracy Grant had to ensue, Christopher had been motivated by her trauma to become a vigilante operating within the neighborhood of Purgatory. This didn't take long for the many crime families in Textile City to take notice of as by the end the first month after Christopher became the vigilante, he had already took out half the Father Don's drug operations all throughout Purgatory. Chris was dubbed "The Shadow" by the criminals he put behind bars as his appearance consisting of an all-black costume made him perfectly blend in with darkened areas of most surroundings, this of course didn't sit well with Father Don and this led to him buckling down on patrols and security at most of his drug labs and warehouses throughout the neighborhood out of fear that "The Shadow" would shut down another safehouse and ruin him yet again.

Powers

  • Bio-electric Pulse: Similar if not exactly like electroreception found in sharks and most other fish species, Gargoyle lost his eyesight at a young age but this awakened his latent 'metagene'. Gargoyle can perceive temporary "sight" via neuro-electrical stimuli emitted from the human brain and create an outline of a person's body through the stimuli. By using this Gargoyle can easily navigate through Textile City with ease, essentially creating a "psychic map" of the environment around him and perceive the outline of even buildings, streets, and cars through this bio-electric pulse he can send out. The Pulse even works underwater too.

  • Psychic Vision: A power born straight from his Bio-electric Pulse, Gargoyle can extract residual neuro-electric energy from a person's dead corpse and create a faint outline of the deceased's or the killer's recent path allowing for a easier chance to narrow down a last known location. This power is extremely limited for how long the person has been dead for seeing how the neuro-electric energy can die out after 48 hours since the person death.

  • Enhanced Human Olfactory System: Christopher's sense of smell was greatly enhanced beyond the peak of an average adult male's. Christopher's new sense of smell allows him to be almost like a bloodhound and be able to smell things like the tiniest trace amounts of blood in the air due to the amounts of iron found in humans blood.

  • Parabolic Hearing: Gargoyle's lack of sight blessed him with the gift of "selective hearing". With this Gargoyle can easily eavesdrop on other's conversations from miles away and can even utilize this power to make himself a human lie detector and sense changes in a person's heart beat or even vocal cords seeing how a person's voice tends to tighten up whenever they tell a lie to someone.

  • Enhanced Vestibular Sense: Gargoyle has a super vestibular sense which allows for a extremely well developed sense of balance, the positioning of limbs and the center of balance as well as the physical condition to use these facts. This combination makes him almost impossible to be knocked down/imbalanced, falling down and able to recover from momentary imbalances near instantly. He is able to perfectly balance on any object, no matter how narrow or unstable it may be.

Combat Stave

Gargoyle's combat stave is a weapon that is an amalgamation of a nightstick and a taser. The stave is collapsible and can be sheathed in a side pocket of Gargoyle's costume. A red switch exists near the end of the stave and is capable of emitting an electrical charge used for both stunning opponents and can even be utilized as a ranged attack. It is also composed out of steel with a leather grip near the center of it to ensure a steady and handy grip on it and prevent from it accidentally leaving Gargoyle's hand while in a fight. Gargoyle has also been seen using the stave as the perfect weapon when fighting against sword-wielding members of The Claw and even Shinobi herself.
Gargoyle's Combat Stave

Abilities

  • Master Martial Artist:

Ninjutsu Mastery - Gargoyle trained with Shinobi and some of her more loyal masters who are ex-members of the clan, The Claw to be an adept fighter at ancient Japanese Ninjutsu. Since The Claw were founded during the early years of feudal Japan, the Ninjutsu Gargoyle would learn would be actual, real ninja-based fighting and would allow for him to at least stand a chance to The Claw in case they after found their-selves drawn to Gargoyle's presence in Textile City.

Eskrima Proficient - Shinobi and Gargoyle both trained in the Philippines, in their respective "origin" stories while go on their paths to become the people they are today. Gargoyle trained in Eskrima, and seeing how Gargoyle was ambidextrous he excelled especially in the dual-wielding component of Eskrima stick fighting. Years later Gargoyle would create his Combat Stave which was capable of breaking apart and taking the form of dual wield Eskrima sticks for in case he ever needed to take down opponents twice as fast.

Jiu-Jutsu Proficiency - Gargoyle's training extended into Jiu-Jutsu proficiency. Gargoyle is capable of overpowering most opponents with his own body weight and then holding them in a grapple strong enough they struggle to get free. This style of fighting is only utilized by Gargoyle whenever he needs to calm someone down or using a melee weapon such as a knife and he quickly needs to disarm them in some way.

Kung Fu Mastery - Gargoyle has mastered a single style of Kung Fu, focusing around counters and moving with the flow of the battle. He also learnt it from the same masters who trained Shinobi. He relies in his Mastery of Kung Fu to perform his seemingly impossible counters and manage handling multiple opponents.
