Biography

Born in Millennium City, Krysta was a frightening child. White as a sheet and eyes burning red, she was shunned before her life had truly begun. Despite that, her parents loved her. They cherished her above all else and in turn Krysta treasured her parents. They were the only ones who treated her as something more than a freak.

From the very beginning her eyes granted her the ability to see the talents of those around her; she could perceive everyone in their element, doing what they were best at. But when she looked in the mirror, she saw nothing but her own reflection. She was talentless. Jealousy festered within Krysta, a malicious envy that only grew stronger as time went by. During her teenage years these feelings induced an evolution in her sight, a twisted answer to her desire to have talents of her own. She discovered she could steal the talents of others.

She delighted in sampling the skills of her peers, using them to benefit herself where she could. Krysta's life ceased to demand any effort, every challenge was met with the fruits of someone else's labours.

Eventually she grew bored of the talents regular people had. As an adult she cast her eyes to the sky, where heroes flew by. Their powers were hers to take if she wished, though she had never dared to try. Her power was theft after all. Crime was in her genes, she had no business playing hero.

So she turned her gaze to the villains, to the gangs of the city. She wanted to build up her reputation and establish a network of allies. To do that, she had to prove herself useful. This desire induced another evolution in her sight, allowing her to transfer stolen power to others, or strengthen their existing abilities.

Eventually she was contacted by a villain known as 'Ruin,' a man with the ability to transform velocity into misfortune. A shot from his rifle didn't need to hit, the speed of the bullet would simply cause an 'accident' to happen. Ruin offered money, security and 'purpose.' It was an opportunity to climb the ladder and rise into the big leagues of villainy. Krysta agreed, taking up the name of Guide's Eye. Initially the partnership worked like a well-oiled machine. Krysta could disable heroes with her sight and Ruin could finish them off with his rifle. But Ruin began to get bored. Krysta made everything too easy. There was no challenge in hunting a powerless hero. This led to Krysta's first infraction.

Ruin ordered Krysta to stay out of his next hunt. When the hunt began, it became clear to Krysta that the target hero would have no trouble capturing Ruin if she didn't step in. So she did.

By day's end, Ruin had gouged out Krysta's right eye, "If you're called Guide's Eye, why do you have two of them?" Ruin believed this action to have secured Krysta's obedience. He didn't take fault with her judgement, he simply couldn't allow disobedience to go unchecked.

Ruin began to hunt heroes that countered his powers. Barriers, Temporal Manipulation, Keen Senses... He would engineer elaborate traps to secure kills and outright refused to use Krysta unless his plans were foiled. Whenever a trap failed, he would order Krysta to disable the target and execute them.

One night, Ruin's trap for a hero possessing the ability to reflect projectiles failed, leading to an order for Krysta to disable the hero and execute them herself. She had been waiting for an opportunity like this ever since Ruin had taken her eye. A moment to get revenge and escape the life she had made for herself. When Krysta pulled the trigger, Ruin was surprised to find the bullet bounced off the hero and ripped through his own stomach.

With that shot, Krysta had set forth on the path of redemption.

Powers

  • Identify - Guide's Eye can focus her sight and perceive the most powerful ability or talent of whoever she looks at.
  • Steal - Guide's Eye can temporarily steal a power or talent she has seen through Identify. The effect ends sixty seconds after breaking line of sight.
  • Invest - Guide's Eye can boost the power or talent of an Identified target. This is extremely exhausting.
  • Fence - After stealing a power or talent, Guide's Eye can transfer it to another target. She must maintain line of sight of both targets. The effect ends thirty seconds after breaking line of sight with either target.

Weaknesses

  • Human - She is an extremely fragile human.
  • Cannot Steal Everything - Her powers function on two levels; Knowledge and Genes. If a power is a genetic mutation, her body will modify itself to achieve a compatible and identical mutation, while also altering the source to become benign. If a power is rooted in knowledge such as magic, she will steal all of the source's magical knowledge and place a psychological block to prevent the source from applying that knowledge. Knowledge in this case also encompasses innate skill and technique, the small nuances of someone's personal ability; all of these things are stolen. The source essentially becomes an absolute beginner over again. What she absolutely cannot steal are things that the source themselves wouldn't consider to be a talent or power (Eg. A dragon wouldn't think breathing fire is a talent or super power.) She is powerless against technology.
  • Telepathic Attack - Her mind is unguarded.
  • Obvious Blind Spot - She only has one eye.

Tropes

Appearance

  • White Mask of Doom Her mask has only one eye-hole and is pure white save for the red circle on the forehead. For someone seeking to be a hero, this is an oddly eerie choice of mask.
  • Eerie Pale Skinned Brunette Her skin is deathly pale, a side-effect of her mutation along with her unnatural eye colour. She's had issues with sunburn all her life.

Personality

  • Reformed But Not Tamed Though Guide's Eye has now taken the path of heroism, she has retained her villainous characteristics.
  • Friendly Enemy Despite now being a hero, Guide's Eye herself actually holds very little ill will towards villains, even going so far as to share a drink with a VIPER soldier. She understands the villain perspective and that people can be make decisions necessary to survive while also being 'wrong.' She respects those who remain on the side of evil, those who would willingly brand themselves enemies of society. She acknowledges that in some ways, that is incredibly brave. However her respect for those defying the law stops at those who take lives for pleasure. Killing can be a necessity, but never should it be a joy.

Combat and Skills

  • Power Parasite Power Stealing is her primary combat ability.
  • Super Empowering She is an asset to her allies, able to power them up in battle. This can be combined with the afore mentioned Power Parasite to bestow stolen abilities.
  • Magical Eye Her eye allows her to identify abilities and talents.

Morality

  • The Atoner Guide's Eye is making an honest effort to make up for her villainous past. But she runs the ever present risk of giving up and abandoning her redemption.
  • Nominal HeroWhile she is atoning for her past deeds, that is purely the only reason she is a hero. She has no vested interest in saving people, nor is she loyal to any lawful organisation. She is fighting to save herself, nothing more.
  • Dirty Business Guide's Eye has done some bad things in the past. Parts of it she took pride in and enjoyed. Others she was given no choice and is haunted by to this day. Worse still, she acknowledges that sometimes when she was ordered to execute an innocent, she took a little pleasure in ending a life. Knowing that, she refuses to take lives if she can help it, for fear of indulging a side of herself she despises.
