Parents and History

Once Upon a Time...

Hannah's mother-to-be Hel has been banished to her own realm that in reality was nothing more than a prison. There the appointed goddess of the dead that have not died in glorious battle sat and brooded. The realm of Hel was, and still is to this day, a bleak and depressing place. Sporting freezing temperatures and populated by those that have died of old age, happenstance, hunger and the like, it can be imagined anything than a pleasing realm to be around.

Even if she would never dream - or rather have nightmares about - of admitting it, Hel got lonely. She craved company, one worthy of her status and power. The Aesir were out of the question, after all... THEY banished her here. The souls under her care were not suitable either, they were bland and depressing, just like her realm. ...and so she looked towards Midgard...

...There was a viking named Olaf...

...Gunnarson. He was also called 'Olaf the Red', and that for good reason. After each battle, raid or skirmish he was dyed crimson by the blood of those that have stood against him. He was strong, lean in build, handsome to a fault with long, wheat-golden hair and quite an impressive beard that he kept in three braids. Yes, the women fell before him whereever he went. On his father's soil the women would squabble and fight against each other for a CHANCE to have a night with the fabled Olaf. Indeed he already was the stuff of legend while still alive. On foreign soil he took the women he came across on his raids, be they willing or otherwise. It mattered not. He slew those men and women that dared raise arms against him and planted his fertile seed in those women that dared or could not.

Over the course of his life he managed to sire over thirtyfour children. For none of them did he take responsibility. He was quite simply put a brutish, raping bastard with insanely good looks by that time's standards.

Maybe that was what intrigued Hel, and maybe that was what ultimately killed him.

Hel wanted this mortal. He seemed so perfect. But she was presented with a problem... he was a great warrior, one that was SURE to die in glorious battle and therefore never come to her realm, but go straight to Valhalla. This was UNACCEPTABLE!

And so Hel hatched a simple, but efficient plot...

After another promising and successful campaign of pillaging the heroes returned home, celebrated as it was their due. And celebrate, they did. One particulary beautiful tavern wench caught Olaf's eye. She was obviously interested in him, but on the other hand seemed so unreachable that it was unbearable. So Olaf drank liquid courage to speak to her. It never was enough. So he drank more, always getting refills from her. He told himself this is normal since he was a hero and it was his due.

But even great Olaf wasn't immune to the call of nature, a painfully full bladder - and so, in the deepest of winter, he went outside behind the tavern to relieve himself and to get a clear head on how to win over the wench. Little did he know that he was so thoroughly smashed with mead that he fell asleep while pissing against the wall, and over the course of the night, froze to death in his own waste.

The tavern wench in question worked only one night there and was never seen, or even remembered, again.

When Olaf Gunnarson entered Hel's Realm, the Queen of the Dead did waste no time to move in for the kill, so to speak. She praised him for being the most successful warrior around, launded him with gifts and generally courted like there was no tomorrow. Olaf, never being the sharpest knive in the proverbial drawer, was flattered and thought himself to be the one calling the shots in this dangerous dance. In reality, Hel wanted him quite badly, yes but in the end she was the goddess here and he a dead drunkard that died in his own piss.

It worked out between the two. At least at the start. But soon enough, Hel learned that her viking-adonis was all brawn and no brain.

They had sex of course, and Hel chose to be pregnant on one occasion. She named her daughter Anne which would later change into Hannah over the course of the years...

Early Childhood

Little Hannah was born dead. But being the daughter of a ghost and a goddess of the dead didn't stop the stillborn childe from moving, crying or growing at an extremely slow pace. Indeed Lil' Hannah was quite the lively little bugger. She spent her first three years in her mothers realm.

Dude! Your Parents SUCK!

Soon it was apparent though that her parents were unable and quite unwilling to fill their roles as "A Good Father/Mother" respectively. Olaf found himself stuck with a little dead bundle of energy. Now, with a son he could have been able to work with. Teaching him to hunt, fight and woo the ladies, now that would have made sense. But as it turned out he had a baby-girl to take care of and with that he could not, would not, work. It was just not... manly to teach her how to cook, clean, and whatnot. No, this responsability was the mother's.

Sadly, for Hannah at least, Hel turned out to be anything but "A Good Mother" as well. At first she tried, but quite quickly she let some ghosts, mainly the women that died of old age, help her with changing the rudimentary diapers, and all the rest. When all was said and done, the old "Grannies" had all the work.

Eventually they gave Hannah away from time to time to varying "relatives". Some were real ones, like Grandfather Loki, while others were relatives only in thought, like "Uncle" Thor or "Great Grandfather" Odin. In the end Olaf and Hel settled for mortal foster parents... the offspring of Olaf's bastard children. With them Hannah had the first impressions of a normal life and living amongst the mortals did alot to positively shape her character. She was still a dead bundle of energy, but now she learned moderation and humility too. As it turned out Hannah aged, but at an extremely slowed pace. The fact that time crawls in Hel's Realm was another thing to consider. So she also learned that she "outlived" her foster-parents time and time again. It would take some time for Lil' Hannah to cope with that.

By the age of six years she had her first gentle steps as a being of potentially great mystical power. She learned to freeze water in her cup. By mortal timescales there had been over 800 years since Olaf The Red had died and been forgotten, his memory too stained by his dishonorable death.

When she was around eight years old she found she had the ability to locate any of her mortal, or immortal, relatives and what they were up to. At age ten she finally learned to step over the threshold over into the land of the dead, her mothers realm. She also visited Valhalla freely.

Finally, at the age of twelve her mother managed to convince the Aesir to give Hannah some form of protection in the mortal world. She was gifted with a small group of eight Enherjar warriors from Valhalla. Spectral chains that only the dead and necromancers could see would connect her to them, and when in dire need she pulled at them - and by that - pulled the warriors out of the ground. While they look quite handsome in Valhalla they basically were very skilled Viking Zombies.

Hannah on her Way towards Independence

After her 12th birthday Hannah had a particular nasty and heated arguement with her mother. Hel was disappointed with her daughter, viewing her as useless and wasting her own potential. Hannah of course, slowly creeping into the age of glorious rebellion - also known as puberty - wholeheartedly disagreed with her. Both were quite stubborn in this. Hel was not the most comforting person around, and Hannah was her daughter after all. Neither side would budge and so Hannah ran away from home.

Hel didn't stop her, perhaps hoping that Hannah might cool off, or even better, do something worthwhile with her life. And so the little dead girl set out into the big, wide world that is Midgard. She stayed with some families of her fathers offspring, sometimes she joined the wandering folk and generally lived amongst humans. This was also the time where she started wearing her hair in a way that obscured the more horrific side of her face and presented the people she met with a more 'mundane' appearance. Of course she was still dead and her eyes aglow but it was a more acceptable appearance. She met a few people she actually could call friends and some more that most would consider enemies but in the end those relationships, good or bad, were over at some time. After all, Hannah was immortal - she aged about a year in two lifetimes of others - and the others were not. When she turned fifteen her father's get already numbered past four hundred, their families not included, and the middle ages had just begun. Some accepted her, some let her stay out of curiosity, some turned away in fear or disgust and some tried, and probably succeeded, to kill her. From time to time she wound up in her mothers realm again, mostly when she died. Or when she found a good read and chose to keep it in her old room. She scarcely talked with her parents at those brief visits.

THE INQUISITION! WHAT A SHOW! - THE INQUISITION! HERE WE GO!

Around the age of sixteen or seventeen europe was slowly going into its Dark Age period. The Spanish Inquisition and The Black Death didn't exactly make "life" easy for her. Friends were scarce and people that wanted to kill her, for whatever reason, were abundant. Indeed, there were times when no week would go by when she wasn't put to the torch or tortured, had a witch-trial or something related. At the start she actually bothered to hide and defend herself when discovered. Or take revenge after being killed and returning from the land of the dead. She wreaked quite some chaos in the Inquisition's ranks, and amongst the people that had ratted her out. In the end, she stopped bothering and just got it over with. After all, those zealots were more horrified when Hannah sang on the pyre about how fat their god had become rather than when she attacked them. This was either due to the blasphemies she sang or for the fact that Hannah can't sing.
At all.

She also made a habit of visiting the ones that killed her a day later to taunt them, only to get killed again, returning yet again and also getting killed, yet again. Rinse and repeat. This kept her entertained for quite some time, but she outlived the Inquisition eventually and was forced to keep herself entertained in some other ways. By now she was in the height of puberty and very jealus of girls that had a partner. She was looking for one too of course but it was all for naught. Nobody wanted to sleep with a creepy corpse-girl, no matter how attractive she might have seemed with her dead face hidden.

Horny like hell, she often went to Valhalla that time. Drunken vikings were not the most gentle of lovers, but at least they were manly and easy to seduce. After all, everybody in question was dead and the warriors were always drunk. Still it wasn't as satisfying as she hoped. But it passed the time for a bit. At least until she was about eighteen.

Growing up for over 2000 Years and you are still not an Adult!

She missed alot of the history in Midgard then and came back when she heard rumors of the Victorian Age. Mortals fascinated with magicks, the grotesque, morbid and death. Needless to say, Hannah went to the British Isles and had the time of her not-life. Finally people were accepting of what she was and actually attracted to her. She had her first relation then with a man by the name Edward Poe, though she eventually had to say farewell to him as well as he died like everybody else does. Later people kept asking her about an Edgar Allen Poe, but sadly she never met that man. They might have had been fast friends. During that time she spent alot of time to entertain the crowd that she always gathered without asking. She was an oddity, a welcome one, and her powers of witchcraft in necromancy and ice magick came in quite handy. Whenever trouble arose, and it did, she just let the attackers kill her or saved some time and did it herself.

Hannah spent more time in her room at home then, reading whatever she managed to get into her cold, dead hands and contemplating her "life". She was quite the emo-kiddy as people like to say nowadays. Slowly she and her mother started to talk again, which was good, but still half of the conversations ended in heated arguements.

'Late' History

She left europe somewhere around the year 1900 and went to see America, after all it was there and she never had been there before. Besides, some of her father's get were there already. That way she more or less managed to miss both world wars as they had very little direct impact in the lives of US-Citizens.

Hannah toured the states, never staying in a place overly long. During that time she also came to realize that she never wants to end up being like her mother - brooding, depressing and cold. So she vowed herself to change and to keep an open mind and a positive outlook. She became more friendly and outgoing than before. Sadly though, the people of the states were not as accepting of her as she hoped, but still she kept trying. Every time she suffered a setback she just would have envisioned herself acting like Hel and instantly have a reason again to put her chin up again and a smile on her dead lips.

Over the course of the coming decade the media also expanded. Music, movies, comics and later even computergames evolved or were born. Hannah was immediately in love with them. She went home for days, weeks, months and years on end to read, listen and watch her newfound stuff. When it was clear that the PC was here to stay she started making a habit of stealing the most cutting-edge system and bring it home where she would nerd away on computergames for years... Not hard considering that time crawls or stands still in Hel's Realm.

Capes, Villains and stranger things, OH MY!

Like so many other unfortunate souls she was in the city of Detroit in 1992 when Dr. Destroyer(TM) used his orbital weapon to obliterate most of the city. Like many others she died that day. Unlike most however she returned, and what she saw that day changed her.

The sheer amount of suffering one person was capable to cause shook the little dead girl to the core. She tried to help, but found her powers were only good to kill people or affected the dead exclusively. So she pulled some strings... well some chains really, and summoned her bodyguards to help her dig for surviviors under the mountains of rubble. Few were grateful. Quite alot were scared out of their minds. A handful died of fright after seeing her or her zombie-vikings.

Needless to say, this irked her.
Alot.

Later when all was said and done, and the city was rebuilding she searched out families that had survived the atrocity and have lost loved ones. She humbly offered the surviviors a chance to speak with their loved ones, and some even accepted the offer and found comfort or at least some form of closure.

When finally Detroit was reborn as Millenium City and Club Caprice opened its gates, Hannah was there. She was at least recognized sufficiently by UNTIL and the MCPD (formerly the Detroit Police Department) in her help after Dr. Destroyer's(TM) attack that she was admitted entry. In there she immediately felt at home. Most of the patrons there had simmilar problems of being fully accepted by the normal parts of humanity and therefore were more open towards Hannah.

It was there that she formulated a plan to prove her mother wrong when she said "The dead cannot get drunk!" and worked against it. She succeeded past anybodies expectations. (see below under THRESHOLD)

You're a woman now... wait, thats wrong. Ahem... You're a goddess now!

The last change in Hannah's dead life would also be the biggest. During quite the inappropriate moment Hannah burst into ghost-flames, exploded, imploded afterwards again and ended up as an amorphous cloud of divine energy called Ichor by most gods.

She had become a goddess.

But how did it happen? She wasn't sure herself first. When she actually had the time for it, she found out... Hannah had fans. Quite alot of them actually. Her easygoing manner, her tendancy of dying of drinking too much in one of the most famous nightclubs of the world, and the fact that she has drunken heroes, villains and gods under the table have gathered her quite a fanbase. Not that she was aware of it at that time.

Some of those fans argued the point that Hannah, being the daughter of the goddess Hel, was eventually becoming or already being a goddess herself. They saw in her the Goddess of Death by Excess and prayed to her. She never knew why she sometimes had heard voices begging that very same goddess for something.

When enough people believe in a concept with utter faith, that belief turns into reality. So now Hannah had turned from a dead girl into a very real goddess.

She found that she could shape her Ichor, her essence, into any form she desired. She experimented a bit until she sticked to two forms: One is a tall, regal and very naked version of herself, designed to show off and drive the point home that she in fact IS a goddess. The other is a rendition of her pre-godhood form as a dead girl. She could have changed her appearance to be more pleasing to the eye, but she thought she would loose part of her true identity if she changed completely.

She immediately went home to see her mother, after all Hel had been a goddess for quite some time. That was the first time when her mother was proud of her own daughter. They talked for quite some time, after all Hannah had alot to learn. At the end of that Hel suggested that Hannah, as goddess of the dead, should create a realm for the souls of her followers. After some quick how-to's Hannah set off to create her own underworld.

Having seen all movies by Tim Burton for over a hundred times, Hannah had quite a clear idea of how she wanted her realm to look and feel like. She named it DOWNSTAIRS in homage of the underworld in the movie The Corpse Bride.

After a while of settling into the role of Goddess of Death by Excess Hannah became restless again. Well more restless than the restless dead for that matter. She still thought about the day Dr. Destroyer(TM) attacked the city of Detroit and still found herself unable to help people properly. That and a particular painful breakup with a dragon, her last boyfriend, made her decide she needed to evolve.

She looked inward into her own self to find a way to use her potential to do some good for a change. After a few centuries DOWNSTAIRS (about half a year on Midgard) she had completed the transition.

She was now Hannah - Goddess of Life & Death through Excess.

Personality, Quirks and other Fun Stuff

It's not easy being DEAD

...and Hannah has been dead since she was 'born'. Indeed she was a stillborn baby-girl. Why she actually moved at all is anybody's guess but it probably payed off that her mother was Hel. Hannah learned quite quickly that she was not one of The Quick (meaning the living) and this had always gnawed at her self-esteem. Other kids, or even her forster families were always uneasy around her, if not hostile. Needless to say her puberty was quite unenjoyable, even more so than for most girls. When others had to worry about dressing up or having the right makeup or shoes that fit their bags, she was devastated by her body and looks. To say that her dating-life was as dead as Hannah would have been an understatement of the highest order. Eventually this lead to her choice of haircut that she still cultivates to this day: Shoulderlong with one half of the face obscured at all times. It helped a litte, but not much. Even if somebody would have considered her despite her looks - the glowing eyes, the cold skin, the absense of a pulse or breath - she still was away from complete acceptence. Even necrophiles shied away from her... after all, the dead body looses much of its appeal if its not smelling like one, and actually moving! By now she has overcome most of her self-esteem problems. They are still there of course, but not to a degree that one would call problematic. She still craves company, intimate company, but so far a longer lasting relationship has, much to her dismay, elluded her. She has all but given up on that prospect.

"Dying is an Art greatly unrecognized!"

Let us state the obvious: When you meet Hannah, chances are you will see her die that very same evening. It has been 'her thing' since she went to the States. Earlier, when little Hannah would have a fatal accident she would have wound up back in her mothers realm. Eventually Hel would fashion a new body for her and send the kid back. Her mother also abused this power to 'ground' her by refusing to send her back or to kill Hannah's body to summon her when she was mad at her daughter. One cannot die this much over the course of a few thousand years and not emerge changed...
And so, when Hannah changed into a goddess herself she deliberately fashioned her form in a way that is easily destroyed. She came to associate dying with coming home, even more so now that she would wind up in her own realm, one that placed having fun over everything else. Nowadays Hannah drinks herself to death, unconsciously steps into the way to 'accidently' get killed in fights, or just plain old kills herself when she feels the situation calls for a suicide or laugh. Both of which are sadly more or less one and the same for her. A psychiatrist would have his hands full with her.

Bad Habits

There are bad habits, and then there are -BAD HABITS-. Hannah has the latter. This is probably one of the reasons why she became the Goddess of Life & Death Through Excess in the first place. She drinks like a fish... no, like 'uncle' Thor, she smokes like a coal-factory and does other, more illegal drugs. She is addicted to dying, even though she will never admit it, and she is horny as Hel. ...wait, that doesn't sound right. What addictions she can satisfy in her brief but numerous visits to Midgard, she does, and for the rest she has to improvise (See the THRESHOLD section below). Sex is probably the one thing she can't really satisfy nowadays. She still visits Valhalla when she is desperate, or has some 'fun time' with one of the souls Downstairs, but she craves more. She craves love, the one thing that elludes her constantly.

Powers, Abilities and other noteworths Things

Attributes Expanded and Explained

Strength:
Hannah, as a goddess can hit pretty, damn hard. Sadly she has not much use for her strength since she is quite inept at brawling. It should be noted that this level is in comparison towards Non-Devine Entities (NDE's for short). Put in comparison against another god, Hannah is strong, but will probably not win an arm-wrestling match. Not always anyway.

Endurance:
As a dead girl, and as a goddess as well, Hannah does not tire. She can keep up physical tasks for as long as she likes... usually until it gets boring. Unless she willingly forces her body to fatigue, she simply does not get tired.

Agility:
Surprisingly enough, Hannah is quite agile for a corpse. She has good hand-eye-coordination, knows how to move her body properly to be counted as somewhat graceful and is insanely good at videogames. Anything past this will reveal her for the clutz she sometimes can be. Compared to normal girls she is about average.

Speed:
Being a dead girl hardly ever meant that Hannah had to run. Sure, she tried to escape the Inquisition or others from time to time, but as it turns out, even a non-zombie corpse-body is not the best basis for moving quickly. Eventually she stopped bothering, after all she had all the time in the world. When all is said and done, Hannah is slower than most mortals.

Fighting:
Hannah hardly knows to fight. She can throw a punch, yes. Everybody can do that... but its more likely to crater in the wall next to the target than to actually hit and crater the targets face. Watch out for her kicks aimed at the groin though. Thats about the only move she ever practiced and learned. And yes, she can kick your testicles into your head if she wants to.

Projectiles:
One of the few strong points of her - one that would make her almost useful in a fight. Hannah is quite adept at shooting things with divine energy, and those bolts pack alot of punch, even on a god-to-god level. She has learned to infuse those bolts of "divine-magic-stuff" as she calls them, with memories (For further information see below under 'Memories - Sharing is Caring' or under the 'THRESHOLD' section). It should also be noted that she would be insanely good with firearms should she ever bother picking one up. She is a bit of a gun-nut and has an extensive knowledge of how they work and behave when used. She is able to eye-shot people with an AWP while jumping and has mastered the recoil on most SMG's, most noticeable on the FN P90, to such a degree that hardly any bullet's miss when she does a "Spray-and-Pray".

Durability:
One of the main reasons why Hannah would be a horribly bad super-hero, or 'cape' as she calls them, is the fact that she can only put so much of her energy into her manifestation or avatar on Midgard. The Ban prevents most of her truely powerful capabilities. She cut a few corners and the cuts mostly ended up in this section - Meaning that Hannah dies - Alot. She views her manifestation on Midgard as a social one and therefore finds it unnecessary to be particular durable. Also, even though she will never admit it, she has grown fond of the hobby of dying accidently when she still was just a walking, talking and dying corpse. Old habits die hard after all.

Resistance:
Hannah is as succeptible to outside influences in her Midgard-Avatar as any other corpse. She doesn't tire, she can drink like a fish and doesn't get sick. She is as flammable as everybody else and even though cold doesn't bother her she can still be frozen and shattered, etc. The list goes on.

Intelligence:
Hannah is smart. Not Albert-Einstein-Smart or Super-Science-Smart, but she gets the more witty jokes and has a grasp of technical and scientific areas. Those she knows because she is a geek at heart. She has more education in history, languages and magic and can often even tutor others in those areas.

Psyche:
Some people say that Hannah is one stubborn dead bitch. The don't even know half of it. She had to be, considering how she was raised, who her parents are and the fact that you have to be pretty stubborn to become a goddess in the first place. That doesn't say that her mind is unreadable though. Or unassaultable for that matter. She DOES have quite an old mind though, and hers is one of a god, so don't expect too much.

Intuition:
If you study magic, wander between the worlds and have to fathom the emotions of a death-goddess you have to be pretty intuitive. And Hannah is just that. Assuming that Hannah didn't see you creeping up behind her doesn't mean she didn't. It probably means that she just doesn't want to spoil your, and possibly her, fun. She can also detect how close people are to dying of excess and always knows a persons "Favorite pick of Poison".

Charisma:
Most people she has met have all agreed on one thing: Hannah is pretty much adorable. Which is saying much for the dead girl with the half zombie face. It all boils down to force of personality, and boy, does she have that. The good thing about her is that she is never truely controlling, but eases into each social circle she enters and joins instead of dominating it. That and her friendly, easygoing manner have gathered Hannah her followers, and of course friends, in the first place.

Gods are OP! NERF!

Those were Hannah's EXACT words when she met the first god she actually witnessed in a fight, which was surprisingly late in her life given the fact that she had godly relatives. But Hel isn't leaving her realm much nowadays and the more warlike-inclined gods of her pantheon are still waiting for Ragnaröck.

Still, the thought came back to her when she turned into a divine entity herself. And they were put into perspective that night. She quickly found out that she can do some things she couldn't do before and couldn't do other things anymore. For instance, The Ban prevents deities from manifesting fully on Earth. Also she found out that spare time was a rarity now and to be treasured as she now gets constantly bombarded by prayers and needs to kindle the faith of her followers into a flame that can grow.

Her true form, as of all gods as far as she knows, is pure, divine energy. This energy is called Ichor by most gods she ever met, including her mother and grandfather of course. In this form she is on one end impervious to harm - with a handfull of extremely rare exceptions - but unable to do much outside her realm. Not that she could visit Midgard in her full glory anyway.

To take any reasonable physical action, and indeed to be seen by anything that isn't a god or archmage at all, she needs to create a manifestation, an avatar, a body. In the end Hannah has two forms she sticks to with each having slight variations in appearance only. The first one is an idealized version of herself, composed of her ghostly-green Ichor, glowing and more or less naked. Since she counts sex as just another form of excess that can lead to death AND life respectively this is purely intentional. Her nakedness never makes her look slutty, dirty or anything else than aesthetically pleasing. This form she usually only employs either in her realm where she can freely use it, or when she want to make a point on Midgard as she has to push against The Ban to keep it up. Even then her abilities are severely weakened on Earth. The most noticably thing that changes in comparison to her other form is that she doesn't die through mundane or scientific means that are not tailored against gods.

The other form is identical to her pre-ascension body. Just as dead and "Just as squishy" as one orc once put it. Since she can change her form at will, size matters nothing to her and she can easily shrink to a tiny little thing or become a towering girl. Indeed in her basic God-Mode form, as she calls her more regal appearance, she is a towering thirty feet tall.

With her essence being freely controlable also comes what she calls Multi-Tasking... being in many places at once. Almost always most of her power is actually DOWNSTAIRS and manages the underworld, prayers and the occasional visitations. Unless one visits Hannah in her realm that person will never see what she can actually DO.

Whenever she can spare some essence she uses a miniscule amount of it to form her mundane, dead body on Midgard to socialize and keep in touch with friends. Also it helps her to stay sane. So what has been seen by media, UNTIL, governments, secret services and the like has been Hannah's social side.

Divine Magic

Hannah practices what most arcane scholars call "Divine Magic". Being the daughter of her mother her initial focus were in the areas of necromancy and ice-magic, allthough those have taken a step back in both priority and usage lately.

Nowadays Hannah only uses traditional magic when she is tutoring others or when forced to do something great on Earth. After all, The Ban is easier to circumvent when one uses tools that are allowed. And rituals still work after all!

Other than that her divine powers are quite crude in both appearance and execution. That doesn't mean that they are not efficient, but they often are somewhat underwhelming on the side of special effects. When she chooses to be somewhere else she ceases to exist in one place and exists where she hasn't a moment before. As simple as that. When she wants something from her realm she simply punches a hole into the air and reality, grabs whatever she wanted and pulls it through the rift. That is about as impressive as most of her "miracles" get. One that doesn't know Hannah could say that she is no goddess but a stage-magician. In reality she of course is a goddess, but an incredibly lazy one.

The only exception here is when she wants to make a point. Then she is all pomp and special effects are a-crazy all around. But those are the rare exception.

It should be noted that most of her power is actually tied up keeping her underworld active... And her Refridgerator (See below under DOWNSTAIRS).

Necromancy

Hannah has mastered all the schools of necromancy. Both the real ones and the one that were entirely fictional, like the spells from Dungeons & Dragons or Vampire - The Masquerade. Admittedly she has to cheat a bit when using the latter as they don't actually work, but she can fill in the gaps with divine magic and make it 'real enough' so hardly anybody will notice a difference.

Also she can freely create a Threshold, that is a line between the land of the living and the lands of the dead. A living being that passes over it dies, its body falling down - dead, while its soul goes on and wonders what happened. Of course the opposite is true as well... a soul walking to the other side will become alive again. She hardly ever uses this as she believes in free will and that nobody should be forced to die, or to live for that matter. The Threshold is visible to both the dead and the living and immediately recognizeable as such. Only if one passes it of his or her own volition will anything happen. If unwantedly shoved over it nothing happens.

The Cold Shoulder

Hannah used to be quite quite adept in frost-magic. Now, a few hundred years ago the school has fallen out of favor in her book. She has no more use for it and probably forgotten more about frost-spells than most spellcasters will ever learn. It is here for completeness sake only.

Memories - Sharing is Caring

This is perhaps Hannah's biggest power. During a long and exiting - read: she died alot through trial and error - time of experimentation she has learned how to extract, and later copy, memories of the departed. Her power is such that she can imbue those memories into people, items and even combine them with spells or a simple blast of energy.

The most disturbing thing about the memories in question is that they are not merely remembered by the recipient. They override some parts of the mind and make it relive said memories. The mind believes it so stubbornly that the body can do nothing but play along and experience it itself. So when one gets a memory of being drunk, the person is - for all intents and purposes - DRUNK. The body displays all symptoms while a medical examination will show nothing wrong with the person in question.

Should you be the recipient of the memory of sex then you better not be in a fight, on some high-ground and the like. Also you will need some spare pants.

Strangely enough this works on anything, even those without a metabolism. So far there have been reports of successful usuage on Elementals without reproduction organs, a formless cloud of void-energy, quite a few gods and a few robots/androids/gynoids. The only prerequisite is that the recipient has a mind that can process memories. So it doesn't work on a toaster or mecha unless that toaster or mecha in question is sentient.

Drinks like 'Uncle' Thor

Hannah is capable of drinking anybody under the table, and has done so on numerous occasions. Most noticeably her 'Uncle' Thor. The drinks in question were all of her THRESHOLD franchise and the sheer amount of discarded bottles made movement next to impossible in one full quarter of her city-sized underworld for over a week. It should be noted that both have sworn themselves never to do that again the next day when they unwantingly rode an avalance of bottles out of the penthouse on accident.

Needless to say the both of them are too dumb and stubborn to really keep true to their word. So far Thor had eighteen re-matches, all lost. The challange goes on weekly.

Dies like a 'Red-Shirt'

It bears repeating that Hannah is utterly useless in a fight on Midgard. She is too slow on the intake, clumsy when rushed, can't hit with her godly strength and most importantly, she can't take hits. Some of her friends are already planning to give her a special gift on her next birthday... a red shirt from Star Trek...

DOWNSTAIRS aka Hannah's Realm of the Dead

Downstairs is Hannah's city-sized underworld, home to those that have died by excess. Be it alcohol poisioning, overdosing on speed, fatal accidents in extreme sports or just plain heart-attacks during sex.

The place is inspired greatly by the movies of Tim Burton, most noticeably The Corpse Bride.
That means the place is colorful. When Hannah created her underworld she wanted to make a place where the dead can just forget the problems of their lives, have fun and lots of it. What she wanted to avoid at all costs was making it anything like her mothers realm. The place is chaotic, loud and through and through enjoyable.

There is a definate day-night cycle. During the time when the sickly green sun is in the sky, that sports Hannah's face from time to time, smiling down on the city, it is buisy and calm like New York at night. Most of the inhabitants use the day to calm down after a night, but a considerable amount just keeps the party going, socializes, chills or does whatever they damn well want.

At night though the city truely explodes into color. The darkness of the black sky is regulary interrupted by fireworks in more colors than any acid-user will ever have seen in his life, the neon signs flutter to life and the music starts booming in earnest. More than one visitor has stated that this city has more life in one night than any place on Earth has in one year. And they might damn well be right!

Topography is such a restriction!

The realm on one hand seems to be a floating island of land in the middle of nothing, with a sun orbiting the shard, while on the other hand its like a tiny planet the size of a city. Needless to say when sane minds try to comprehend the topography most go mad. Some take their life and just book an apartment there. In the end there are a few constant things.

It is divided into a number of Quarters that grow in size AND number with each excess that worms its way into the realm.

Allways central to the realm, no matter how much it changes, is the "Respawn Quarter" or just Central as most inhabitants that don't share Hannah's nerdy phrasing call it. Here are the accomodations for everybody, including the imposing tower of the goddess. The towers appearance and structure changes on the whims of its goddess. One night it might be a dark, forboding, gothic tower a few hundred meters in height and on the next it looks like a giant dildo with windows, white fireworks coming out of the very top included. Indeed, everybody has the power to shape his or her abode in any way they like. It's as easy as mentally picturing it and the next morning it will be as desired. To say that this Quarter looks a bit eccentric is a bit of an understatement, but it is always fun to re-discover.

Around that Central Quarter stretch out the others:
-The Red Sea, more or less the Red Light Quarter, is always illuminated by red lightsources of varying forms. Here you will find any sexual fetish that you desire or are intrigued about that are also consentual.

-The Drunkard's Path, also known as The Party Zone, a Quarter solely consisting of bars, pubs, dance-clubs and things like a permanent Oktoberfest. The music here can often be heard in most parts of the city.

-The Parcour, an outdoor area which will fill every extreme sports fan's heart with joy by just looking at it. Scateboarding arenas shake hands here with motorcross tracks, canyons and mountains for freeclimbing, more mundane racetracks and at least one river with quite the rapids in it. The Quarter has varying difficulty levels that range from what would be called dangerous Upstairs to downright insane. Loopings with spikes and moving parts, monstrous creatures in the river, climbable volcanoes and more. This Quarter perhaps changes the most right after Central. The fans of this area always find new challenges to try to overcome. Most die trying but there is always one that defeats the Quarter and gets celebrated on The Drunkard's Path later... or The Red Sea. Next day he will try something even more insane and mangle himself or die on his first try. He wouldn't want it any other way.

-The Zoooooone, also known as Chill is a Quarter to ... well chill out with various substances not covered by other Quarters. After all, sometimes you just want to pass a jolly around and be happy without bothering about strobelights, dancing and whatnot.

-The Battleground, or also called The Arena is the Quarter dedicated to direct, fun, competative and more often than not, full body sports. Navigating the Quarter is quite easy as long as one doesn't enable PvP when entering. Once you are "Flagged Red" as the saying goes, you are game. You are given whatever weapons you want and start to try rack up a score. The buildings there are all full of powerups that enable you to do various things like double-jump, fly, walk through walls or instagib your opponent if hit. Of course this would all be terribly unfair and so there is a balancing system in place making sure that only people with insane skill are put against those with superior firepower. Those that do not prefer those kind of sports find various smaller arenas on the edges. Be it for blood-sports or simple sparring, if somebody thought of it you will find it there somewhere.
Also of note are the scoreboards and rankings. One just has to look up and see how everybody in each current matchup is ranked by kills, deaths, hits, etc. Those scoreboards are visible from all accross the city and almost every establishment has a few TV's that do live shows of ongoing matches from The Battleground.

Metamagic Reality

Downstairs is governed by some rules, that cannot be broken by its inhabitants, layed down by Hannah when she created the realm:

-Nobody, under any circumstances can do real, lasting harm to another in this Realm.
Fights in The Battleground and anywhere else are always consentual and will only then be possible. If one attacks another that doesn't want to fight the defender becomes invulnerable to the attacker.

-Nobody shall ever need for anything here.
Everything is here for everyone. Therefore nobody owns anything and everything at the same time. Some Inhabitants choose to work at the various establishments out of their free will, but they only do it for as long as they want to.

-Nobody shall ever get lost or stuck here.
No matter how convulsed or crazy the topography gets, everybody instinctively knows where all the locations are and how to get to them efficiently. Additionally there are multiple EXIT TOWERS that stretch upwards into infinity. Everybody is free to leave the realm if so desired. One simply enters the door, goes up a few steps and ends up... well Upstairs, in the land of the living. The soul in question is still a ghost, but otherwise free to do whatever ghosts do up there. If so desired, every ghost can go down ANY stairs and will himself to go Downstairs and he will enter where he left again.

-The next day is only after I've slept damnit!
Meaning that even after one has died - again - one wakes up at home around mid-day the next day, fit again to have fun. Note that The Battleground is an exception to the rule... there one can "respawn" multiple times per match and when it is over is put together again should one be "dead".

Inhabitants and "Living" Downstairs

One could assume that Downstairs is only a place for the restless dead and statistically that is the majority. Still from time to time the living... amongst other things, visit. Either because they asked Hannah directly or because one of the permanent residients invited them. Everybody can invite for a night, as a Trial-Version so to speak. Visitors entering immediately understand the laws and can fully interact with each and everyone here. They even get a temporary home. Most waste precious time customizing it... having godlike power in that regard for the first time.

As far as the mentality goes... everybody seems to get along fabulously. Either due to the laws or due to the fact that they need but want something and they get it. Arguements are hardly ever hostile and those that do arise are sorted out in drinking-contests, who-can-bang-the-most-bitches-contests or The Battleground. Even then there hardly ever survives a grudge for overly long. And so you have vikings drinking beer with bikers, goths, hippies, punks and whatnot. The realm seems to drain them of animosity. Except when its "friendly" and "fun" of course. When in doubt Hannah checks out disputes herself and settles them. After all SHE IS the law here, quite litterally.

Power-Draw and that damn Refrigerator

As previously stated most of Hannah's power is tied up with maintaining her realm. About 85% of it in fact.
Of those 85% more than two thirds keep her Refrigerator running. Now, one might ask: "WHY?!"

The reason is quite simple if one looks at that kitchen-appliance closely. Or actually dives into it.
For The Fridge contains every food, drink and drug ever concieved by a sentient species. Accross time and space. If you want the spice wine from an extinct alien race from the Andromeda Galaxy you can find it in there. If you are looking for a drug not yet invented you just get it from the Fridge.

Needless to say that thing requires an insane amount of her essence constantly to exist everywhere in time and space simuntainiously. If Hannah's essence would ever be weakened, THIS would be the first thing she looses. So much is certain.

THRESHOLD aka Hannah Hel-Dottir's Famous Drinks of Death(TM)

Hannah Hel-Dottir is know to mix some of the most smashing drinks known to man, alien, angel, demon, deity or whathaveyou. Details are as follows...

How they work

Hannah turned really creative once she decided that she would prove her mother wrong when Hel said: "The dead cannot get drunk! Stop wasting your time trying and do something useful for a change child!". Part rebellious behaviour, part 'Challenge Accepted', she set her mind to the task of how she could get the dead and that, by virtue of her being a stillborn includes Hannah, PROPERLY SMASHED.

Her first experiments by using the ashes of undead bodies that were, in life, drunkards proved... somewhat intoxicating. Also they proved to be extremely smelly. Indeed when Hannah made a shot that she spontainiously named 'Headshot' the stench cleared the whole bar. Well, one could argue about tastes all day, but in the end those people that find the smell of a mass grave, unearthed in the middle of a month of rain, enjoyable are still a minority. So poor Hannah set out to experiment more in another direction entirely.

Memories.

The memories of the restless dead to be exact. Some of them had quite a treasure-trove of drunken moments and she learned to access them and put them to good use.

Her drinks nowadays are infused with varying amounts of drunken memories that, when imbied, are re-lived by the person's body in question. Mind over Body is the theme here. Even people that have been proven to be resistant or even immune to the effects of alcohol are affected. So far the only subjects that have proven to be immune to this are things without a mind to assimilate the memories. But the search goes on...

The Brand (Logo )

After realizing she had a very powerful tool at her hands to increase her followers AND populate DOWNSTAIRS she decided she needed a brand name, a patent and some advertising. By now her brand is all over the media and close to being a household name. THRESHOLD (in capital letters as an homage to Death in the Discworld novels) is the name of the game and since she already started naming her drinks after combo-kills and kill-streaks in the first person shooter Unreal Tournament, she just sticked with the concept.

The THRESHOLD logo itself is a stylized face as seen from the front, on the left side a grinning skull, on the right a beautiful, smiling maiden. A thick red line divides the face. It should be noted that the drinks itself are available in almost every big club or bar, be it Club Caprice or Leo's Bar. The owner of a bar just needs to think about wanting to have the drinks and they will be in a crate by next morning.

Good Idea - Bad Idea - REALLY STUPID IDEA

Hannah's THRESHOLD line of drinks are quite dangerous to the average mortal. Indeed Hannah killed herself quite a few times when she tried to find the proper dosage of memories. The poor girl managed to vomit out all her intestines after the first test-batch. Still, there will always be idiots that think they can handle anything, even a bottle of "THRESHOLD - GODLIKE!".

For that reason, every box she delivers has a note on top that clearly states how dangerous the contents are to "non-supers" as they are called. Unless the note is fully read AND understood by the bar's owner he or she will not be able to open and access the crate. The crate itself is very durable, even though it appears to be made of rotting wood, and should excessive force be used then the contents will be destroyed along with the crate.

Hannah's legal department - yes, she indeed has one - made sure that she cannot be held resposible for misuse of those drinks as they are only accessible to people that UNDERSTAND the risks. If somebody is stupid - or suicidal - enough to kill himself with it, it is not her fault.

Side-Effects may include...

As it was already stated, the drinks contain memories. It should come as no surprise that they ALSO contain the memories of the hangover afterwards.

What also should be noted that those drinks glow. And not like a firebug. Depending on the amount of memories in the drink, the illumination the liquid provides lies between half a meter to slightly over 320 meters. The first one might have the intensity of a glowstick seen at raves while the latter burns brighter than a magnesium torch.

The glow's color varies by category of memory. Drunken memories glow in a eerie ghost-green, while her more 'mature-oriented' Mindfuck line glows in a deep purple and has been known to make earth elementals climax, even though they were missing those vital body-parts.

In most of the stronger drinks you will occasionally see ghostly images of people. In case of the classical line, those images are seen drinking, laughing, stumbling, vomiting, laughing and drinking some more most of the time.

THE BIG LIST OF DRINKS

THRESHOLD is broadly categorized by color and strength. Combo-Kills are the lowest in strength while Kill-Streaks usually pack way too much punch for any sane AND mortal individual.

It should be noted that the memories are compressed, therefore the privacy of the donor's past is kept intact and also, nobody, not even a god wants to be drunk for half a year, followed by half a year of hangover. Most shots effects last not longer than half an hour to three hours tops, while the bottles last roughly around half a day to a day.

What an interesting color!

Following are the most common colors:

Ghost-Green

By far the most common of Hannah's drinkable abominations of joy: Memories of being drunk.

Dark Purple (And yes, it still glows bright. Don't ask how.)

One of the more seedier ones, but still quite in high demand: Memories of intercourse. Here the 'flavors' can get quite specific, but what you will not find are snuff-memories. Hannah is no fan of rape and the like.

Pulsing Red

The underdog of the lot... Memories of being in love, feeling that hug from that special somebody and connecting on a emotional level.

Gras-Green

Memories of being stoned. Hannah still has no idea why those sell at all.

How much punch packs...?

Here is a list of the most common drinks of the Ghost-Green line. Dosage of memories varies at the other colors, but its a broad guideline. Needless to say that when orders a 'GODLIKE MindFuck' one is not getting half a year worth of sex into one evening. The other colors just scale differently.

Combo-Kills aka Shots

Inspired by the male announcer's voice in Unreal Tournament these drinks are to be swallowed quickly. Once downed the very same voice will boom the name of the shot in question quite loudly.

Headshot!

1cl of Absinthe that roughly contains 1-2 hours worth of a bingedrinking memory. The liquid illuminates a radius of about half a meter.
Problematic for children and infirm persons.

First Blood!

2cl of Absinthe that roughly contains 2-4 hours worth of one or two bingedrinking memories. The liquid illuminates a radius of about a meter.
Fatal to children and infirm persons. Problematic for the average mortal.

Double-Kill!

4cl of Absinthe that roughly contains 6-8 hours worth of about four bingedrinking memories. The liquid illuminates a radius of about two meters.
Fatal to children, infirm persons and possibly Joe Average. Problematic for the hard-core drinking mortal.

Mega-Kill! (also known as Tripple-Kill to some)

8cl of Absinthe that roughly contains 14-16 hours worth of about eight bingedrinking memories. The liquid illuminates a radius of about four meters.
Fatal to most mortals except the ones with outstanding constitution.

Ultra-Kill! (aka Quad-Kill)

16cl of Absinthe that roughly contains 28-32 hours worth of about sixteen bingedrinking memories. The liquid illuminates a radius of about eight meters.
Fatal to almost all mortals. One in a million or so might survive one of those and will probably regret it for at least a few days.

MONSTER-KILL!

0,33l of Absinthe that roughly contains 58-64 hours worth of about 32 - 36 bingedrinking memories. The liquid illuminates a radius of about eight meters.
Instantly fatal to mortals.

Kill-Streaks aka Bottles

Inspired by the male announcer's voice in Unreal Tournament these drinks are insanely strong and a bit more casual to swallow. Once opened the very same voice will boom the name of the bottle in question quite loudly.

Killing Spree!

A bottle of regular (or Classic) Mead that roughly contains five to eight DAYS worth of non-stop drinking memories. The liquid illuminates a radius of about 20 meters.
Instantly fatal to mortals.

Rampage!

A bottle of sweet Mead that roughly contains ten to sixteen DAYS worth of non-stop drinking memories. The liquid illuminates a radius of about 40 meters.
Instantly fatal to mortals.

Dominating! (aka The Dominator)

A bottle of Cherry-Mead that roughly contains one MONTH worth of non-stop drinking memories. The liquid illuminates a radius of about 80 meters.
Instantly fatal to mortals.

Unstoppable!

A bottle of Cranberry-Mead that roughly contains three MONTHS worth of non-stop drinking memories. The liquid illuminates a radius of about 160 meters.
Instantly fatal to mortals.

GODLIKE!

A bottle of Cannabis-Mead that roughly contains half a YEAR worth of non-stop drinking memories. The liquid illuminates a radius of about 320 meters.
Instantly fatal to mortals.

Other Drinks

Any Beer(TM)

How many times have barkeepers heard the phrase: "Just bring me any beer."? Quite alot will most answer, and since Hannah has on occasion tended to a bar she thought of something. The result is an oddity amongst Hannah's drinks, indeed it is not even part of the official Threshold brand.

It is a magic beer nontheless - a blank bottle of 0.5 liters capacity that has an opaque and simple form, a blank label is on it with just the green, glowing letters "Any Beer!" on it. If one looks closely one can make out a embossment in the form of the THRESHOLD logo, but thats it. Other than that the bottle is featureless.

The magic has three effects, the first two are triggered when one uncaps the bottlecap. First, the contents change to the uncapper's favorite brand of beer. Second, the beer changes in temperature that is again the most favored of the uncapper's.

The third effect is after one throws away the bottle: It falls apart into tiny component particles, utterly - but harmlessly - consumed by itself.
