Powers and Abilities

No inherent powers, though her ever-evolving array of gadgets gives her great flexibility. In addition to a small lab's worth of lockpicking and intrusion gear, she also carries

  • Miniature radio, concealed in one earring; the microphone and aerial are hidden in her scarf,
  • An experimental VIPER defensive energy shield, worn on her left upper arm,
  • Kinetic-enhancement gloves and boots,
  • An ARGENT jet-pack, for those hard-to-reach places.

Weapons

Magpie liberated an experimental set of sharpened titanium claws from VIPER, and uses these when dealing with armoured foes. She also has a talent for martial arts, which she uses when faced with less deadly threats.

Motivation

  • Art is wonderful.
  • It's fun to take stuff.
  • Find out what really happened to her boyfriend.

Biography

Born and raised in a run-down suburb of Liverpool, Amanda Stone graduated from light shoplifting to housebreaking at the age of fourteen. Except for art class, school bored her, and she was constantly getting in trouble when small things (like, say, the sprinkler shutoff valve during a fire alarm) went missing. She soon ran away from home and lived on her wits, eventually being taken in by a young engineer, Stephen Grice. From him, she learned to love electronics, designing and building numerous gadgets just for the simple thrill of seeing what they'd do.

After a few years, though, his behaviour became erratic. He disappeared mysteriously shortly thereafter. Baffled by his disappearance, and needing a source of steady income, she created a costume based on Monet's famous painting The Magpie, using her devices to provide herself with the necessities of life, plus a little extra.

Magpie's most recent caper was as a trial member of GRAB. Her task was to disable the Bayou Queen's security system while the rest of the gang robbed the passengers. Somehow, though, a message was sent and several superheroes showed up, handily defeating her teammates. Amanda only managed to evade capture with an ignominious cannonball over the side, using a pocket rebreather to swim to a safe distance underwater. Somewhat understandably, some members of GRAB are very interested in explaining their displeasure at her performance at length - if and when they get out of Stronghold.

Since then, she's learned a few things about her boyfriend's disappearance: she's fairly certain he was making something for the Purple Gang, some kind of psionic amplifier. Her investigation continues.

While her tendency towards larceny makes working with some heroes problematic, she is happy to cooperate with them in situations where the whole world is in danger. After all, that's where all the neat stuff is.

Notes

  • Her education stopped at the tenth grade, though she has a keen talent for engineering.
  • She is a kleptomaniac, something rare in a professional thief; if various small items of no material value are missing from the crime scene, the MCPD knows that Magpie's a likely suspect.
  • Generally doesn't fight to kill, unless absolutely necessary. (Her philosophy is that if she has to fight, then somewhere she didn't do her job right.)
  • While Magpie has been linked to Foxbat in the past, she only rolls her eyes when asked about him. For his part, he usually replies with a combination of hand gestures and pelvic thrusts.
