Background and History

Origins

Little is known about Mandus's actual origins, mostly due to the fact that his identity is indistinguishable. From what information he reveals, he was born in Seattle, Washington, to two loving, but slightly troubled parents. Back then it is believed his name was Oswald, with his surname unknown. There were approximately 270 children named Oswald in the country within the years of his presumed birth. Due to financial troubles, his parents sent him to live with his grandparents in Millenium City. Dut to their lax parenting, he spent a lot of time performing minor acts of juvenile vandalism, such as grafitti art, and on one occasion, setting fire to a refuse bin.

At the age of 14 or 15, he somehow became connected to the Circle of the Scarlet Moon through an unknown contact. He was offered a position as an unofficial courier to deliver messages and relics without drawing attention. As Mandus later personally noted, "None of it was particularly world-ending, but they still didn't like people asking questions about what was getting delivered. I always asked, and eventually they started answering." Oswald slowly gained the trust of some of the Circle Members, as well as their suppliers, learning what he was delivering, and sometimes how to use it.

After the acquisition of an ancient scroll for soul consumption, he took a physical interest in the subject, and privately made a photocopy of the spell. The original scroll made its way to its intended destination, assisting some lieutenants with soul extractions. Oswald attempted the ritual on his own, but without the discipline of an experience mage, had no restraint. His first victim ultimately perished, leaving being a withered husk unsuitable for magical control, black mail, or any other forms of spiritual enslavement. Oswald had his first taste of blood, so to speak.

Millennium City Operations

Oswald's operations continued for a while, but with a very slow escalation. He only attaceds rivals of the Circle of the Scarlet Moon, to make them appear to be gang killings. That, plus their sporadic frequency made it difficult to determine that the soul extractions were carried out by an individual. Naturally, Oswald's sense of loyalty to the Circle brought them the wrath of several other power players such as DEMON, The Infernals, and the Crowns of Krim. This caused heavy gang pressure upon the Circle which led to a review of its members.

At this point Oswald simply seemed to disappear. No one knew where he was, what he was doing, or if he was even alive. Though suspicions were raised about Oswald being the traitor, he was never formally accused, so many Circle members assumed he had simply become another casualty. No body was found that was definitively identified as him, but a toothless husk was eventually found wearing clothing believed to be Oswald's.

Years later, the appearance of a Black Ace as a withered husk, one stiff breeze away from being ash, was found in a warehouse with six others, still alive, but drooling, or vegetative. Arcane investigators identified the attack as being perpetrated by someone with a soul extraction spell. As more bodies began appearing across the city, amongst various other killings from other evils, rumors began spreading about what was first jokingly called 'Oz, the great and powerful.' This moniker was initially intended as a gag, with the actual culprit believed to be a narcissistic wizard-hater. As the soul takings began to escalate, the name 'Oz' began to carry significant weight. Oz was believed to be a sort of Boogeyman for the wicked, who found the blackest of hearts and the most vile of souls to take and devour.

The Mandus Project

The name Mandus first surfaced when a survivor of the "Soul Taker" was discovered, shivering and alone, with a page inscribed with Percy Bysshe Shelley's Ozymandias poem. Though the find was presumably coincidental, its poetic romanticism in the mysterious ruin left behind at Soul Taker sites, accompanied by rumors of Oz the Boogeyman. The moniker was then heard lengthened fully to Ozymandias the Soul Taker, but eventually boiled down to just Mandus, or Oz.

A mundane arcane historian by the name a Grimri caught wind of the rumors, and began assembling a collection of stories, notes, clippings, maps, sightings, and anecdotes regarding the Soul Taker, referring to the collection as the Mandus Project. Though his efforts he assembled a clear mental picture and profile of Mandus, and even ultimately determined that if Mandus was NOT Oswald the courier, he at least had known him on a personal level. His obsession with the criminal grew out of control, and his cataloging became increasingly erratic, up until his final journal.

Tonight I have met Mandus. He is both nothing and everything I have imagined. So mundane you would never notice him in a crowd. So otherworldly that even the sanest minds go mad at the sight. Beautiful and terrible. He questioned what I knew, and satisfied, gave me chance to pen a final entry. My soul shall become one with his shadowed Babylon. I shall sink into the warm, clear oceans of terror and melancholy. I looked upon his dark works, and despaired. He is a mighty, endless, empire. He is all shall dream of again; that dark maw which swallows up the congenial face of man. For he is no man; he is Mandus.

Grimri was found dead a week later with the word "MANDUS" scrawled in charcoal across his wall, and a grayscale photo of a truly large and muscular male, wearing tattered jeans, and a sleeveless black hooded jacket. The hood cast and unnatural darkness over his face, making his identity indeterminate.

'Powers and Abilities

Powers

Power 1 - Put info on your power here. Be as lengthy as you like.

Power 2 - Not every hero HAS powers, of course, in which case the powers section can be deleted.

Power 3 - Just take everything from the HR tag above the Skills section, up to the "Powers" sub-header, and delete it. You can also edit the Main Header to take the word 'Powers' out of it as well.

Skills

Skill 1 - Skills are the things your character has learned to do, or has an innate talent at doing.

Skill 2 - These skills can be as mundane as painting, to more fantastical things such as enchanting items.

Skill 3 - If your character has no particular skills worth noting, feel free to follow the same directions as shown for the 'Powers' sub-header on how to remove this section.

Attributes

Attribute 1 - Attributes are physical or mental traits, separate from powers in most cases, though possibly enhanced by them.

Attribute 2 - Attributes can be things such as flexibility, or being naturally acrobatic, or good eye-hand coordination perhaps.

Attribute 3 - Again, like the last two, if you have no use for it, delete this section. You can also ALTER the section if there is something missing that you would find more fitting.

Gear and Equipment

Gear

Weapon - Gear and equipment are the things your character carries around and uses. These can be things like weapons and armor.

Armor - Feel free to use this section to name and describe the gear that your character uses, if any. Be, again, as lengthy as you like.

Gadget - If this section does not apply to your character, feel free to delete it. Also feel free to add more sub-headers as they apply, such as for a vehicle, perhaps, and that vehicle's statistics.

Relationships

Lover

This section is specifically for a spouse, lover, or some other form of paramour. Feel free to use any of the formatting from 'Friends/Allies' below.

Friends/Allies

Put any friends or allies your character may have in here. You may give them descriptions or simply list them. To make a numbered list, simply place a # at the beginning of each new line:

  1. This guy
  2. That guy
  3. Some chick

For a non-numbered list, put an asterisk instead (the lines are optional. Simply remove the HR tags if you wish to remove them):

  • This guy

  • That guy

  • Some chick

Or, you could even use a smaller sub-header for each person, effectively creating a small section on them, like this:

That Guy I Know

Put info on the friend here.

That Chick I Met

And here.

Some Dude at the Bar

Don't forget this one.

Enemies

Put any rivals or enemies here. You can give descriptions, or simply list them. Same idea as the Allies and Friends.

General Perception

Put here the way your character would be perceived by the general public. This means, the things that the general public would know, how the media would portray them, things people might know without ever having met the character.
