Kai'el is a quiet listener from a planet in chaos, the Velarian Confederation located some 55,000 light-years away is plagued by numerous civil wars and grandiose political infighting. Deciding they wished to raise their children on a calmer more antiquated planet his parents set off for earth, figuring that a planet on the other side of the galaxy should be quiet enough. Sadly when they arrived it was not as quiet as they had hoped however the exuberant reactions from their children were more than enough to get them to stay.

While his parents took up new jobs that aligned with their skill sets, Kai'el and his twin sister Le'za took to what they did best; exploring Millennium City. Kai'el found friends with more 'unique' interests whilst Le'za fell more so in line with the mainstream, both however eventually gained the nicknames Kyle and Liza--respectively--as their human friends thought made their names a bit simpler. Kai'el friends took the form of a witch-in-training named Calliope, a martial artist named Derek, and a computer genius named Sarah, the Quantum Quartet as they called themselves became known around their community for their 'investigative journalism' which primarily consisted on writing on their shared blog about the various happenings in their neighbourhood.

On a hot summer's day the quartet went to the museum to investigate a host of Egyptian artefacts which had just been uncovered in an obscured unmarked tomb for thousands of years. As the four teens snuck into the exhibit they overheard arguing between a woman with a helmet, ivory skin, black hair, and a deep green dress and a rather frightened archaeologist-type by the name of Doctor Jackson. Making sure to record the exchange they watched as the woman in green attempted to touch what appeared to be a cover stone five feet in circumference held in place by a few ropes and inscribed with various hieroglyphic and pictographic reliefs but as she neared roughly an inch or two from the surface she violently recoiled her hand as if she had touched an open flame. Issuing a low word of warning to Jackson she marched off clearly furious whilst the doctor collected his notes and left for his office. Against his better judgement, Kai'el's investigative side took over and he snuck over to the cover stone. Slowly but surely his hand reached the face of the stone, a cringe washed over his face expecting to be burned like the woman before him but a look of confusion swiftly replaced it as it felt as if he had touched a slightly cool stone, most likely sandstone but he wasn't a geologist. As the others came out of hiding they all examined the cover stone, taking pictures and videos of this 'mysterious object' surely super valuable--Sarah figured--and as she estimated a general price Calliope took flight and when she attempted to read the pictographs the shrill sound of the woman in green's voice could be heard calling out "Thieves! Pests!".

Frightened half to death, Calliope's flight spell began to fail and so she reached for the cover stone, grabbing hold to once side and as result the rope on a single side snapped causing the large stone to go flying into the nearest wall like a pendulum with Calliope holding on for dear life. As the stone impacted the wall it shattered and lost cohesion, turning into sand which Calliope fell into safely. Within this pile of sand was an ankh made of carnelian, as the quartet ran to Calliope's aid, they attempted to back-pedal as fast as they could only to run into Doctor Jackson who's wall they had impacted with the cover-stone. Frantically he rushed forward and dived into the pile of sand to retrieve the ankh, the helmeted woman let loose a loud scream; shattering the glass in the room and causing cracks to run through Kai'el's glasses. The doctor turned the the quartet and threw the ankh in their direction, informing the group in general to "Place it against your chest!" not sure of which of them would catch it.

With the others preoccupied with their attempts at breaking a door down, Calliope slid across the floor and caught the ankh before it impacted the floor. Being hoisted up by a green vine conjured by the woman in green, Calliope began to wrestle for control of the ankh. Noticing her struggle, the remaining members of the quartet once more came to her aid to pull onto the ankh. Picking up some of the sand from the collapsed cover stone, Doctor Jackson ran forward and threw it into the exposed eyes of the woman breaking her line of sight and ending her end of the tug-of-war. As the quartet fell into a pile and the woman had thrown Jackson into a wall, the ankh once more rose to fly over to her--albeit slower and erratically as she rubbed the sand from her eyes--from the top of the pile Kai'el stumbled forward and leaped onto the floating ankh, landing on top of it in attempt to prevent it from moving, as it touched his chest it glowed white-hot and fused onto his chest, melting into a large ankh-shaped symbol on his chest. The woman appeared absolutely flabbergasted, with the sound of incoming sirens she swore that she would one day return for what was rightfully hers before launching an emerald bolt at the centre of the room causing plants to burst forth from it to obscure her escape. Moving swiftly and attempting to ignore the pain, Kai'el dragged the unconscious body of Doctor Jackson to his friends and if by instinct he threw up his hands to erect a magenta dome around himself and his friends to prevent the plants from possibly suffocating. Derek questioned how he was doing that, Kai'el replied that it simply felt natural, Sarah made sure to take pictures.

Soft-spoken, idealistic, accepting, and conscientious are all words that best describe Kai'el; his inner desire to help and support others is only matched by his interest in the socio-political development of other cultures and species. Though he is still young and getting a handle on his newfound abilities, he does his best to provide help and support for those in capes and not to which he is often described as a 'momma bear' to his friends and even the criminals he places under arrest. His treatment of criminals is one of the traits that sets him apart from his peers in that he strives to provide even the most hated of enemies a choice to set aside their criminal ways and used their skills or abilities for the greater good.

After the plants had been put out and the doctor had been taken to a hospital the kids explained their experience and were allowed to go home with some later questioning at a later date once they had reviewed the security footage. A few days had past and Kai'el realized that he was seemingly able to make shields when he felt threatened and concussive blasts when he focused too hard on a certain thing; needless to say his sister was not happy when she found her fish tank had sprung a leak. A police officer informed the Quantum Quartet they'd like to sit down and talk about the woman but apart from that the testimony of Doctor Jackson who appeared to vanish after speaking to them was enough to clear them from possible breaking and entering charges.

A few weeks later Calliope came up with a plan to take the Quantum Quartet blog to the next level: superhero journalism. With Kai'el's newfound abilities and the skills and talents of the others they would have no problem investigating super powered paranormal or otherwise strange incidents. But first, they needed names and after long deliberation and internet searching they came up with Witchtastic for Calliope, K-O Kid for Derek, Sister Software for Sarah, and Desher for Kai'el. They decided from that day forward the Quantum Quartet would become the number one superhero news blog, run by heroes.

The strange and atypical are Kai'el's playground and he revels in the new and 'presently fascinating' with his very short attention span, moving from topic to topic in conversation, asking questions without 'filtering' them, examining strange things often with a sense of nascent curiosity that would kill the cat, revive it, and investigate how such a bizarre happening could have occurred. Though he doesn't talk a lot and prefers to listen, he is quite the friendly individual who often maintains a calm smile. Being supportive at heart, he does his best to encourage his friends and assist his enemies to better themselves through things such as positive reinforcement with the end goal of reforming them from villains into heroes; he has also expressed that he does often get tired of having to catch criminals whom just broke out of prison for the fifteenth time this week. A large portion of his introspective nature comes with a tenaciously investigative streak though this isn't always investigation and is sometimes just extreme curiosity. While his IQ is above average he still does not come close to making holmesian leaps of logic, but to compensate he has adapted Holmes' investigative style to create a makeshift scientific method of his own by keeping himself detached from a situation in attempt to see the bigger picture of his investigation.

Personality

Soft-spoken, idealistic, accepting, and conscientious are all words that best describe Kai'el; his inner desire to help and support others is only matched by his interest in the socio-political development of other cultures and species. Though he is still young and getting a handle on his newfound abilities, he does his best to provide help and support for those in capes and not to which he is often described as a 'momma bear' to his friends and even the criminals he places under arrest. His treatment of criminals is one of the traits that sets him apart from his peers in that he strives to provide even the most hated of enemies a choice to set aside their criminal ways and used their skills or abilities for the greater good.

As an alien youth on a foreign world hundreds of thousands of lightyears from anything he even remotely understands to be 'normal', he often finds himself frustrated by his inability to connect with humans as easily as they seem to be able to without fault or failure. Seeing himself very often as an outsider looking in, Kai'el does his best to use this to his advantage in the field of xenology as he is capable of gaining a unique perspective on the 'human experience', one that is often clouded by one's own human preconceptions.

The strange and atypical are Kai'el's playground and he revels in the new and 'presently fascinating' with his very short attention span, moving from topic to topic in conversation, asking questions without 'filtering' them, examining strange things often with a sense of nascent curiosity that would kill the cat, revive it, and investigate how such a bizarre happening could have occurred. His naivety regarding the unknown can often get him into trouble, but, on a fundamental level he struggles with situations which do not have an absolute black or white resolution; protesting that it is universally unfair to have an end to something which leaves you with contentious feelings of uncertainty opposed to the clearly more satisfying resolute knowledge that comes from a definitive response.

Powers and Abilities

Molecular Speed Manipulation

Following exposure to a tachyonic field, Kai'el's electromagnetic field gained the ability to augment the speed of molecules which pass through it to speeds beyond or below luminal by use of electromagnetism. At the beginning of his life as a hero, the Velarian only displayed the ability to slow matter down enough to where it could be dodged and or -- in the case of people -- easily arrested, as time went on and through training with allies he learned how to enhance this power further to a relatively large area; resembling in operation the ability to slow time to a near-halt. Only as of recent did he learn that he was equally capable of accelerating matter in motion to the point where it impacting another object could result in an explosion, or, accelerating a stationary object to the point of melting; earning him the moniker Railgun from his fellows in the Quantum Quartet.

Racial Traits

Velarians evolved several evolutionary traits to allow them to not only survive but to thrive in their otherwise extremely hostile environment. Tidally locked to its giant moon of Andarion -- which is itself nearly another planet at half of the size of Velarius VII -- the homeworld of the Velarians has a standard day roughly ten Terran days; the Velarian trait to remain awake for thirty Terran days is often cited as their rise as the dominant species, needing only eight hours of sleep per these thirty days periods of wakefulness. Another evolutionary boon would be their enhanced sense of hearing with a range of roughly 65 Hz to 43 kHz with a maximum distance of just under three hundred feet in thicker atmospheres such as Earth.

Abilities

  • Gymnast: Kai'el possesses both agility and flexibility due to formal as a gymnast. Though 'classically trained', there are influences of modern parkour added into his physical codex of moves and manoeuvres; his formal training excels primarily in the fields of flips and vaulting.
  • Polyglottism: His travels across the galaxy and eventual arrival on Earth sparked a talent for linguistics within a young Kai'el; learning languages at an exceptional pace compared to his abysmal school grades in other fields. His interest in alien languages eventually spread to the field of xenoanthropology and his new life on Earth provided for him the perfect opportunity to study a unique brand of aliens in their natural habitat; as well as another contribution to his hobbies, the human science of cryptozoology.
  • Computer Programmer: Following the previous ability, computing codes are viewed by him as similar to just another alien language that can be deciphered in time. This has allowed him to learn computer programming at quite the impressive rate and through his interactions with his computer-oriented teammates, he is learning more and more in this field.

Weaknesses

  • Mortal: Whilst in his either form he is susceptible to magical curses, charms, hexes, psions, possession, illness and the like.
  • Electromagnatism: As the speed of the particles that he manipulates are charged form or another -- positively or negatively -- a manipulator of electromagnetism or simply an object or field with a similar charge would be able to refract or redirect his attacks back at him with ease.
  • Sonic Devices: With the ability to perceive sound differently than a human in a Terran atmosphere comes its own challenges. Chiefly among these is that he has a lower tolerance for exceedingly loud sounds or devices designed to emit powerful sound waves and such things induce immense pain, inability to focus, and vertigo.

  • Cable Ties: A bundle of dual looped red cable ties kept within his belt's pouches. They are entirely normal red plastic cable ties with no special qualities but are quite effective at apprehending normal criminals; they tend not to work so well on super-powered entities as he has found out.
  • Heads Up Display: Providing him with a constant data stream of information, access to all the cat videos he needs, and the location of the molecular clusters he is presently controlling is his heads up display; an advanced piece of future technology given to him by a friend from the future.
  • Utility Pouches: A number of pouches line his belt which by default contain: three small sample containers, five sample swabs, a pair of latex gloves, and a small UV torch. Several others are left empty for situational use as exemplified with Kai'el typically using them to store a chocolate energy bar, ten dollars, his bus pass, and fifty marbles just prior to going on patrol.
