History

Origin

Kai'el is a quiet listener from a planet in chaos, the Velarian Confederation located some 55,000 light-years away is plagued by numerous civil wars and grandiose political infighting. Deciding they wished to raise their children on a calmer more antiquated planet his parents set off for earth, figuring that a planet on the other side of the galaxy should be quiet enough. Sadly when they arrived it was not as quiet as they had hoped however the exuberant reactions from their children were more than enough to get them to stay.

While his parents took up new jobs that aligned with their skill sets, Kai'el and his twin sister Le'za took to what they did best; exploring Millennium City. Kai'el found friends with more 'unique' interests whilst Le'za fell more so in line with the mainstream, both however eventually gained the nicknames Kyle and Liza--respectively--as their human friends thought made their names a bit simpler. Kai'el friends took the form of a witch-in-training named Calliope, a martial artist named Derek, and a computer genius named Sarah, the Quantum Quartet as they called themselves became known around their community for their 'investigative journalism' which primarily consisted on writing on their shared blog about the various happenings in their neighbourhood.

On a hot summer's day the quartet went to the museum to investigate a host of Egyptian artefacts which had just been uncovered in an obscured unmarked tomb for thousands of years. As the four teens snuck into the exhibit they overheard arguing between a woman with a helmet, ivory skin, black hair, and a deep green dress and a rather frightened archaeologist-type by the name of Doctor Jackson. Making sure to record the exchange they watched as the woman in green attempted to touch what appeared to be a cover stone five feet in circumference held in place by a few ropes and inscribed with various hieroglyphic and pictographic reliefs but as she neared roughly an inch or two from the surface she violently recoiled her hand as if she had touched an open flame. Issuing a low word of warning to Jackson she marched off clearly furious whilst the doctor collected his notes and left for his office. Against his better judgement, Kai'el's investigative side took over and he snuck over to the cover stone. Slowly but surely his hand reached the face of the stone, a cringe washed over his face expecting to be burned like the woman before him but a look of confusion swiftly replaced it as it felt as if he had touched a slightly cool stone, most likely sandstone but he wasn't a geologist. As the others came out of hiding they all examined the cover stone, taking pictures and videos of this 'mysterious object' surely super valuable--Sarah figured--and as she estimated a general price Calliope took flight and when she attempted to read the pictographs the shrill sound of the woman in green's voice could be heard calling out "Thieves! Pests!".

Frightened half to death, Calliope's flight spell began to fail and so she reached for the cover stone, grabbing hold to once side and as result the rope on a single side snapped causing the large stone to go flying into the nearest wall like a pendulum with Calliope holding on for dear life. As the stone impacted the wall it shattered and lost cohesion, turning into sand which Calliope fell into safely. Within this pile of sand was an ankh made of alabaster, as the quartet ran to Calliope's aid, they attempted to back-pedal as fast as they could only to run into Doctor Jackson who's wall they had impacted with the cover-stone. Frantically he rushed forward and dived into the pile of sand to retrieve the ankh, the helmeted woman let loose a loud scream; shattering the glass in the room and causing cracks to run through Kai'el's glasses. The doctor turned the the quartet and threw the ankh in their direction, informing the group in general to "Place it against your chest!" not sure of which of them would catch it.

With the others preoccupied with their attempts at breaking a door down, Calliope slid across the floor and caught the ankh before it impacted the floor. Being hoisted up by a green flame commanded by the woman in green, Calliope began to wrestle for control of the ankh. Noticing her struggle, the remaining members of the quartet once more came to her aid to pull onto the ankh. Picking up some of the sand from the collapsed cover stone, Doctor Jackson ran forward and threw it into the exposed eyes of the woman breaking her line of sight and ending her end of the tug-of-war. As the quartet fell into a pile and the woman had thrown Jackson into a wall, the ankh once more rose to fly over to her--albeit slower and erratically as she rubbed the sand from her eyes--from the top of the pile Kai'el stumbled forward and leaped onto the floating ankh, landing on top of it in attempt to prevent it from moving, as it touched his chest it glowed white-hot and fused onto his chest, melting into a large ankh-shaped symbol on his chest. The woman appeared absolutely flabbergasted, with the sound of incoming sirens she swore that she would one day return for what was rightfully hers before launching an emerald flame at the centre of the room causing it to burst into flames while she made her escape. Moving swiftly and attempting to ignore the pain, Kai'el dragged the unconscious body of Doctor Jackson to his friends and if by instinct he threw up his hands to erect a magenta dome around himself and his friends. Derek questioned how he was doing that, Kai'el replied that it simply felt natural, Sarah made sure to take pictures.

After the fire had been put out and the doctor had been taken to a hospital the kids explained their experience and were allowed to go home with some later questioning at a later date once they had reviewed the security footage. A few days had past and Kai'el realized that he was seemingly able to make shields when he felt threatened and concussive blasts when he focused too hard on a certain thing; needless to say his sister was not happy when she found her fish tank had sprung a leak. A police informed the Quantum Quartet they'd like to sit down and talk about the woman but apart from that the testimony of Doctor Jackson assured that they did not start the fire.

A few weeks later Calliope came up with a plan, to take the Quantum Quartet blog to the next level: superhero journalism. With Kai'el's newfound abilities and the skills and talents of the others they would have no problem investigating super powered paranormal or otherwise strange incidents. But first, they needed names and after long deliberation and internet searching they came up with Witchtastic for Calliope, K-O Kid for Derek, Sister Software for Sarah, and Stygian for Kai'el. They decided from that day forward the Quantum Quarter would become the number one superhero news blog, run by heroes.

Teenage Hero

So far, Stygian's career has been rather eventful; capturing small-time criminals and preventing various theft-related crimes. But in this period it was where his powers became more solid in their operation, he learned through focus he could produce his desired results rather than as an emotional reaction. Similarly he slowly became aware of how to control his emotional reactions so he didn't create a force field every time he was the least bit frightened or break something via a concussive blast.

It was also during this time that Calliope--now known as Witchtastic figured out that his powers were channelled from the astral realm--something he was unaware of till she had found out about it in her studies. A good portion of his time was also spent with his friend-from-the-future Psyquisitor, a mutant with telepathic and technopathic abilities who was able to provide Stygian with not only gear but also practice in how to use his powers as both Stygian and Psyqusitior's abilities were accessed in the same or similar fashion.

While he wasn't looking too deeply into it, Sarah--also known as Sister Software-- had begun to look into what the ankh was and where Doctor Jackson had gone after the police had questioned him. As of recent she's has no real leads aside from the various magical practices of the Ancient Egyptians.

Within a few days of him becoming a hero with his friends his parents also found out about it but did not say anything, finding his style of work to be largely risk-free. Additionally they did not want to interfere with what they saw as a perfectly valid life choice, and while they did not speak of it, they supported him and his sister through their endeavours in unspoken ways. Such as signing Stygian's release forms for PRIMUS or getting singing lessons for Le'za.

Personality

Though he doesn't talk a lot and prefers to listen, he is quite the friendly individual who often maintains a calm smile. Being supportive at heart, he does his best to encourage his friends and assist his enemies to better themselves through things such as positive reinforcement with the end goal of reforming them from villains into heroes; he has also expressed that he does often get tired of having to catch criminals whom just broke out of prison for the fifteenth time this week. A large portion of his introspective nature comes with a tenaciously investigative streak though this isn't always investigation and is sometimes just extreme curiosity. While his IQ is above average he still does not come close to making holmesian leaps of logic, but to compensate he has adapted Holmes' investigative style to create a makeshift scientific method of his own by keeping himself detached from a situation in attempt to see the bigger picture of his investigation.

Though typically quiet, he is without a doubt not a pillar of serenity. As a teen he still displays a lot of insecurity with himself and in his place as a hero; often times comparing himself to other heroes. One could say he has a fear of the unknown which is rather odd and possibly symbolic as the astral plane--the source of his power--is quite literally unknown till someone allows their imagination to run free. All in all he suffers from the same things that any teen does, and just like most teens, he does his best to subvert his insecurities and flaws by surrounding himself with supportive friends and positive people.

Powers and Abilities

Astrakinesis

Upon becoming a conduit to the astral plane Stygian gained the ability to channel the energy from the astral realm and will the flow into different forms and intensities, this occasionally comes paired with an incantation of sorts when he does something particularly strenuous; while entirely unnecessary Stygian finds it assists in his concentration and just sounds cool. Because of both his inexperience he has displayed a limited number of applications that could theoretically grow in time with more practice and mentorship.

  • Astral Attacks: The simplest form of his attunement comes in the form of projecting concussive blasts of raw astral energy that can be altered to range from a mere gust to a blast powerful enough to shatter stone.
  • Astral Constructs: The next step up in the way of manipulating the energy itself is through the collection of astral energy into a singular point to create a solidified form of whatever he is able to imagine limited by both his concentration and his willpower. Typically this takes the form of a rudimentary creature lacking finer details but capable of engaging in combat.
  • Astral Projection: As one would expect of someone attuned to the astral plane, he is capable of projecting his spirit into the astral realm. Currently he can take a single--willing--person with him on this journey and astral project with them for up to forty two hours before feeling severely exhausted and subsequently requiring an extended period of rest.

Racial Traits

Velarians evolved several evolutionary traits to allow them to not only survive but to thrive in their otherwise extremely hostile environment. Most notably would be their psionic abilities that allowed them to track their prey on the dark side of their planet. While it is not perfectly tidally locked, the giant moon of Andarion itself is half of the size of Velarius VII itself allowing it to slow down the rotation of the planet to such a point that a standard day is roughly one Terran month.

  • Velarian Hearing: Tall pointed ears adorn either side of Stygian's head which allow him and the rest of his species to hear in the thin air of their planet. Whilst in a thicker atmosphere like earth he is capable of an above average range of roughly 10 Hz to 32 kHz.
  • Velarian Wakefulness: With Velarius VII being tidally locked to its giant natural satellite, most--if not all--species evolved to be able to remain awake for the entire period of its 'day'. In Velarians this is characterized by the ability to remain awake for roughly a month with eight hour periods of rest within that month.
  • Velarian Lungs: Similar in origin to their ears, the thin atmosphere of Velarius VII required lungs more efficient than that of humans. While they posses no real noticeable difference within earth's atmosphere--aside from perhaps less frequent breaths--they allow Velarians to breath within the atmosphere of their homeworld and other similar thin atmosphered environments.
  • Tactile Telekinesis: A generally broad ability which, when generalized, means that he has a psionic field which surrounds his body. This field can be used to enhance his strength to lift roughly twice his own weight, propel him further to increase his jumping distance, and protect him from harm till the field is overloaded due to duress or willing deactivation.
  • Visual Telepathy: Nigh-identical to the ability of mind reading with the stipulation that the thoughts he perceives are in the form of visions and that it is unconsciously initiated upon skin-to-skin contact with the one on the receiving end; depending solely on the person being read the visions could be a collected and orderly or a jumbled mess of nauseating flashes.

Abilities

  • Gymnast: As a competitive gymnast, Stygian possesses both agility and flexibility due to formal training started during childhood, though, he avoids having to explain exactly why he was he had such training stating "It is a bit embarrassing". His training primarily revolves around handspringing and vaulting which he has been known to enhance with his telekinetic abilities to bound lengthy distances.
  • Intelligent: Whether from his racial background or simply due to luck of his gene-pool, Stygian has displayed a higher than average intellect by human standards. He does have a particular affinity for mechanical and electrical engineering and with the occasional dabble into nanotechnology.

Weaknesses

  • Psionic Inhibitors: As his powers are either psionic or stem from his natural psionic abilities, psionic inhibitors are capable of entirely preventing him from accessing his abilities through means of subversion.
  • Defensive Magic: While not entirely a weakness that cripples him per say; due to the nature of his powers and the nature of magic his astral abilities can be deflected, rebounded, or simply blocked with defensive spells. Because the astral energy he uses is manipulated psionically, his abilities are conversely not rendered inert by anti-magic fields.
  • Fear: As his powers work on the concept of psionically willing himself to do something there are times when his emotional states can vastly affect not only the intensity of his powers but also the very use of them as well. Self-doubt and fear cause his abilities to become unruly to the point of simply not working or becoming dangerous. Unfortunately as a teenager at the crux of adulthood; he is heavily subject to these waxing and waning states.
  • Electroshock Weaponry: Unlike psionic inhibitors which last for as long as they are worn, electroshock weapons of all varieties will leave Stygian crippled both in the means of his abilities and physically. Presumably they disrupt his higher brain functions which control his abilities and in turn result in his entire power set being disabled for a measure of time afterwards that depends entirely on duration and the amperage of the current that was applied to him.

Paraphernalia

Gear

  • Self-assembling Supersuit: As an expression of his astral abilities he is able to manifest a supersuit made from solidified astral energy. The suit itself resembles spandex in texture and qualities but he is adamant that the suit is in fact "self-assembling astral fibres formed with conscious thought of the desired product".
  • HUD Mask: A refined version of the original helmet using technology given to him from the future by his friend Psyquisitor. It retains the smartphone capabilities of the helmet with a few additional ones such as the neural interface to control it, an optional homing beacon which can transmit his heart rate and brainwave patterns, and a vision filter that allows for owl-like night-vision.

Transportation

  • Bus Pass: Unlike many heroes, Stygian neither has the funds nor licence to drive or pilot a vehicle. As such he relies on public transportation or his abilities to get from point 'A' to point 'B'.

Notes

RP Hooks

  • Velarians live on the other side of the galactic core, however, those informed of galactic affairs may know of the Velarian Confederation.
  • He can be seen riding public transportation in full hero attire, while heroes are by no means rare in Millennium City, one might find it rather odd for them to take the bus.
  • Those whom can see or detect energy wouldd notice that he is quite the glowing source of astral energy.
  • Based on his cracking voice, short stature, and PRIMUS file, one could easily determine he was a teenager.
  • Those with access to PRIMUS files would know that he has detained a total of twenty three small-time criminals since registering.

Trivia

  • The physical properties of the astral energy he produces are often compared to a cool blast of air which smells faintly of ozone. When used offensively the damage appears kinetic in nature and leaves the surface that was impacted chilled.
  • He has a blog with his friends and often advertises it. The blog, when looked up, produces articles on various interesting, mysterious, or otherwise paranormal activity. The most popular one with several hundred views is "The Toaster of 276 Sherbet Dr." a piece on a haunted toasted which could spell out predictions in the toast, sadly the toaster was found destroyed in the morning after it made a prediction the owner disliked.
