ORIGIN

Home Life

Beatrice "Tris" Oliver was born to Meredith Oliver and Daniel Flannigan in Concord, Massachusetts. Her father had left her mother before she was born. But soon after Beatrice's birth, Meredith moved to Boston and married the first of several men that Beatrice would know as stepfathers, most of them abusive. Generally the abuse was directed at Meridith, but Beatrice herself was victimized by more than one of them.

By age 12, "Tris" (as she preferred to be called) stayed away from home as much as possible. She found acceptance among the youth of Boston's streets. People called them punks, goths, vermin, trash...but Tris called them family. Her formative teenage years would be spent in underground clubs, getting tattoos, committing small-time crimes. Generally she thumbed her nose any way she could at the society that, in her mind, created the helpless, self-loathing woman that she saw in her mother.

School Life

Tris doesn't see much point in school. She rarely attends St. Patrick's, where she is enrolled, and when she does she is a frequent troublemaker. Smoking, drinking, fighting, disrespecting the staff -- a typical rebellious "bad girl." Though much of that behavior was curbed after the "54 Incident."

The 54

How ironic that one of the few days Tris attended class would be the day the science teacher, Dr. Tischmak, used his Genetic Manipulation and Empowerment device upon fifty-four senior students, including Tris. Transformed into a crystalline monster (or so she felt at the time), Tris was initially terrified. But as the months passed, with the help of some other members of the 54, she gained a measure of control over her new abilities.

Millennium City

After gaining super-powers, PRIMUS "sponsored" (Tris would say "butted in to our lives") the 54 and arranged for many of them to visit Millennium City, where they could be more closely observed, and influenced by the high-profile costumed heroes there.

Though reluctant at first, Tris has fallen in love with Millennium City. She'd been in plenty of street fights and bar brawls as a normal human, but now the fights are bigger, and she is nearly "indestructible," as she often claims.

Tris has left Boston behind, and never went back to school after the incident. She has set herself up in "Mil Cee," residing in and protecting the streets of Westside under the identity of the superhero "Shard."

Musical Career

Prior to the event that created the 54, Tris was the drummer in a local Boston punk band called The Taint. Unfortunately, her bandmates seemed unable to handle Tris' transformation, and broke up the band, reforming without her knowledge as Sewage. She has toyed with the idea of joining or forming another band, but crime-fighting has occupied her time.

PERSONALITY

An individualist in the extreme, Tris bucks against labels, and generally dislikes most authority. She believes fervently in the value of the individual, and resists any and all efforts to oppress personal freedoms or identity.

Tris can be aggressive in social situations, recognizing few taboos and swearing like a sailor. She is blunt and forthright, taking on conflicts with brutal honesty and cutting sarcasm. Despite her extroverted and sometimes offensive behavior, she is loyal to a fault to those she accepts as friends. She doesn't back down from a fight, and will readily put herself on the line for those she cares about.

Quirks

She prefers "Tris," and will respond poorly (sometimes violently) to anyone calling her Beatrice, Bea, or most anything but "Tris." In her school days she sent many a bloody-nosed boy to the school nurse's office for deliberately trying to annoy her in this fashion.

Adjusting to Mutation

After her initial transformation, Tris was frightened and angry. Helping to take down Dr. Tischmak helped cool some of the anger, but she remained fearful that she would be a monster forever. Since her classmates helped her learn to control her abilities and resume her human visage, she seems to have adapted well to her new condition. She has even become friendly with many other students that she once would have been less than congenial to, and those that would not have given her the time of day. If she is still harboring any emotional trauma over her metamorphosis, she is masking it well.

POWERS & SKILLS

Powers

Crystalline Form: Shard can transform her body into organic crystal similar in appearance to amethyst and obsidian. This form is much stronger and tougher than a human body, highly resistant to damage, and effectively immune to telepathic intrusion (deciphering her crystalline brain is a herculean task). She can also regenerate in this form, regrowing shattered crystal at a phenomenal rate. The crystals themselves are extremely hard and sharp, making them effective weapons as well. Crystals that do break away (whether by her will or by damage) will crumble to sparkling dust after about ten minutes, and finally disintegrate completely within an hour.

Crystal Manipulation: Tris can voluntarily break away small shards of her own body and cause those crystals to grow according to her will, creating such effects as a crystalline prison, or projecting jagged shards toward her foes. She is mastering finer control, such as creating a temporary "cast" of crystal for an injured comrade's arm, and even altering the shape and properties of her crystalline form.

Crystal Boarding: A longtime skater, one of Shard's first tricks was learning to shape a crystal "board" to ride. She can pull off some unlikely maneuvers via quick adjustments to the shape, density, and texture of the board, including skating along and up walls, and launching into the air for extended jumps (even gliding for a short time).

Skills

Tris in her human form.

Skateboarding: Tris is a skilled skater, an ability she applies with her powers when she creates crystal boards.

Pool Shark: Tris' primary source of income (aside from stealing from criminals) is betting on pool, which she usually wins.

Music: Tris is a fair drummer with a few years of experience under her belt. She also has a decent singing voice, though she rarely applies it.

WEAKNESSES

Sonics/Vibration: Sonic- and vibration- based attacks can be tuned to match the resonant frequency of Shard's crystalline form, potentially paralyzing her or causing her body to crack and shatter. She is capable of changing this frequency, but this requires her to shift back to her human form and to crystal again.

SHARD: THE MOVIE

If a live-action movie were made about Shard, she would be played by Fairuza Balk.
