Slapperfish is a rather well-known superhero to the majority of the Champions Online community. Although he is most popular for his wacky, out-of-the-box costume techniques that no one in their right mind could think of or pull off, he can certainly hold his own in actual combat, capable of dealing a flurry of unexpectedly powerful punches in a matter of seconds. Most opponents don't realize that they've been sent flying by a four-legged fish until it's too late.

Origin

In early Summer of 2003, a small team of geneticists, marine biologists, and paleontology experts made a revolutionary breakthrough in the evolution of living organisms. "Project Darwin", as it was called, would rapidly accelerate the genetic factors of trait mutation in a living organism, and, in theory, speed up the process of its evolution that would normally take hundreds of millions of years, compressing it into the mere span of a few months. The team would start by testing the effects on smaller, simpler, aquatic organisms placed in different simulated environments and situations, then work their way up to organisms such as large fish and frogs, and more rapidly changing artificial environments. Fearing that the project itself would be very controversial (especially amongst creationists and the like), the team decided to situate their project on a remote location off the coast of [CLASSIFIED INFORMATION]. On February 26th, 2005, the first live specimen larger than 1x1x1 cubic feet was successfully "Darwinned": a 5-foot-long species of lungfish native to the Detroit River, that had been recently discovered by one of the team's top marine biologists, Gabby Gray.

The majority of changes were somewhat expected. Its strong, pectoral fins has evolved into fully-functioning, frog-like limbs, and its simple lungs had evolved further to adapt to life in a sub-aquatic environment, mirroring the evolution of fish into amphibians during the Devonian Period of Earth's geological history. However, the specimen now had a playful, dolphin-like personality, and now showed unexpected signs of high intelligence, almost on-par with the average human child. With this amazing and powerful evolution, it was able to learn, communicate, and eventually, to even speak. The team grew very fond of the creature, treating it more like a loveable child than a pet or a science experiment. Gabby herself even gave it a nickname after observing the surprising strength of its limbs and tail: "Slapperfish".

By late spring of that year, Slapperfish had enough knowledge of the world to survive on his own. The people at Project Darwin bid him farewell, and Gabby Gray was the last to see him off, requesting that he travel to Millennium City and put his abilities to use there. Slapperfish willingly accepted, and, promising Gabby that he'd be back someday, set off to make a living for himself in this world outside the confines of Project Darwin.

Personality

As stated before, Slapperfish possesses the average intelligence of a human child. He is happy, optimistic, energetic and outgoing, but also curious and inquisitive at times, often getting himself in trouble but learning from past mistakes. He normally doesn't take things seriously, and can even make fighting crime a humorous sport, cracking jokes or insulting his foes while evading their attacks, and sometimes making snappy comebacks or witty one-liners after a fight.

Powers and abilities

Overall, Slapperfish is stronger and more agile than he looks. Piscine reflexes allow him to dart quickly, turn on a dime, and even evade oncoming projectiles. Powerful muscles in his limbs let him throw punches and kicks with surprising speed and force. Coating himself in a thin layer of slippery mucus, he can regenerate quickly outside of combat, or partially shield himself against an enemy's more powerful attacks.

Although not as useful a power, Slapperfish can inherently communicate with other forms of marine life, though he is often times mistaken as food by larger sea creatures such as sharks, toothed whales, and seals.

Allies and Other Potential Friends

Because he is well-known, Slapperfish can often be seen mingling with his friends or helping other heroes. However, some of his closest friends come from Project Darwin, while a handful of others are some rather unlikely heroes.

Gabby Gray

Slapperfish's first true friend, and one of the few "normal" ones. Formally known as Prof. Gabrielle Grayson, Gabby obtained her marine biology degree at a university in southern California before moving to Millennium City in 1998. She was aware of the dangers of living there, but decided to move there in order to study the effects that the Battle of Detroit had on the Detroit River's marine life. One of her most notable discoveries was was the Michigan Lungfish, in 2003, and had a live lungfish shipped to Project Darwin for experimentation. She didn't regret doing so one bit, in fact, the "creation" of Slapperfish made her adore and respect the species even more.

Some time after Project Darwin closed its doors, she returned to Millennium City, and now resides in an apartment due north of Renaissance Center.

Junkbot

One of Slapperfish's oldest superhero friends, Junkbot is the often-present sidekick of Junkman, a crime-fighting homeless man notable for utilizing his makeshift armor and weapons (salvaged from landfills, garbage trucks and littered alleys) with great efficiency. Junkbot seems to have been built out of loneliness, and is very intelligent despite his clunky appearance. It doesn't see itself as a true sidekick, but rather, as a "stunt double", willingly putting its artificial life on the line for more dangerous tasks that could otherwise kill its creator. Thankfully, Junkbot's greatest asset is the ability to miraculously rebuild itself from scratch, even when dismantled, demolished, or missing several parts. Sometimes, the rebuilding process adds even more junk, which it can use for other purposes.

Nemeses and Other Potential Enemies

Although Project Darwin had created various other sentient creatures since their experiments began, none have come remotely close to being as unique and memorable as Slapperfish. In fact, some of them are quite the opposite, and have become uncaring, cold-hearted, and even ruthlessly notorious, often putting a personal bounty on Slapperfish's head.

The Codfather

A genetically modified Codfish, The Codfather is one of Slapperfish's most threatening and recurrent archenemies, and leader of the recently-founded villain group, S.L.A.S.H.E.R.S. (Sinister Legion Against Super-Heroism and Everything Regarding Safety). What The Codfather lacks in strength and power, he more than makes up for in genius-level intelligence, a seemingly endless supply of goons, and a slick tongue. He possesses general knowledge of military-class munitions and various fields of technology, and even boasts a small amount of psionic manipulation from having an overdeveloped brain.

Giant Enemy Crab

One of the few shelled invertebrates to be genetically altered in Project Darwin, the evolution process only resulted in making this once-normal Fiddler Crab into a monster the size of a station wagon, with a disposition every bit as nasty and intimidating as its big claw. Giant Enemy Crab, as he is jokingly referred to by superheroes, is stubborn, aggressive, and always itching for a fight. A little on the dim side, he'll gladly take orders from others, if it means getting one step closer to his personal goals.

"Ahaha! Ahahaha! Look at it! Look at its cute little face! I can't take it, I'm gonna die! Ahaha! It's adorable! Ahahahaha! Oh! My chest hurts! Aha!" - The Flea

OOC Trivia, Notes from the Creator, and other Misc. Information

  • Slapperfish's name was inspired by a running in-joke between some friends and I in an older MMO, where certain fish could be wielded as weapons, but inflicted no additional damage.
  • Slapperfish is the oldest character still on my CO account, albeit not the first. He came about design-wise when a chance accident during character creation made the distinctive "fish head" (consisting of the Open Visor Helmet, Large Goggles Up, and the Helmet Grill).
  • Slapperfish was originally a DEX/EGO Telekinetic Blades character, some time before the Melee Pass went live.
  • Slapperfish's current build primarily consists of a mix of unarmed Martial Arts and Might abilities, using DEX/Str/Rec as superstats.
    • Originally conceived as a DEX/EGO "concept" build after the Melee pass, it was notably powerful in PvP as well, and stayed relatively unchanged some time before the Martial Arts pass. Slapperfish could normally oneshot squishier players with a fully-charged Haymaker, and cause immense damage to more resilient players if the knockback wasn't avoided.
