Appearance and Personality
Payton is quiet. Her natural response to group situations is to find a convenient location to lurk, only occasionally offering the barest measure of interaction to retain her position in the dialogue. While not misanthropic by any means, she suffers from acute social anxiety that often manifests in her classic 'stone wall' facial expression. Despite this, she has a resolute and unwavering dedication to the principles she has chosen and often breaks out of her shell to defend them. By her account, the mark of a hero is to do what other people aren't made to do, up to and including sacrificing yourself so someone else might live.
It's an understatement to say she dislikes anti-heroes.
Payton considers her callsign a testament to who she is. Aside the obvious scientific implications, she makes every attempt to subvert her emotional state for the sake of others. While new and inexperienced to Millennium's heroing culture, she considers her involvement in it a civic duty.
Powers, Skills, and Attributes
Powers
The Smoke - Payton's powers involve the direct transformation of her body into smoke. This conversion takes into account mass, and so the output of smoke is equal to the amount of herself that is transformed in this way. While Payton is capable of 'smoking' any part of her body, she is susceptible to the weaknesses that would naturally come from that. Transforming her head completely would leave her blind and deaf, transforming her legs would reduce her mobility significantly, and so on. Since the development of her powers, Payton has learned how to maintain physicality in sections of her body while transforming others (it would be a pain to patrol without eyes, after all). The actual transformation event can be managed in two ways.
- Slow burn: This method involves a steady transfer of mass, often beginning with the upper skin layer. The output of smoke from this is controlled, and this method is often employed for things like smoke signals or distractions. Recently, however, this effect has begun to happen involuntarily.
- Flash burn: The more explosive form, this method sees main use in combat. By flash sublimating a section of her body, Payton can create a sudden explosive surge of pressure. Her uses of this range from crowd control to close quarters combat, the assisted pressure surge increasing the strength of her blows threefold.
The Control - An offshoot of her familial powerline, Payton has limited influence over her autonomic nervous system. Paired with a higher than average reaction time, this allows her control of her body by an order of magnitude above average. In most cases, this ability is used in tandem with her smoke to allow quick and specific transformations tailored to the situation at hand.
Skills
Varma Kalai - As a student of Fulminate, Payton has begun advanced study of martial arts. With a little less than five years experience, she has limited knowledge in utilizing pressure points to disable her opponents. Aside the martial aspect of this study, she is also moderately versed in the healing aspect.
Attributes
Hypermobility - Seperate from her transformative abilities, Payton was diagnosed with JHS when she was thirteen. Shortly after her metahuman abilities manifested, the signs of osteoarthritis that had begun to manifest in her body almost entirely disappeared. For the moment, she enjoys the benefits of hyperflexibility with none of the downsides.
Gear and Equipment
Gear
Armor - Sublimate makes use of a unique body armor created in part by her mentor. The surface of the armor is segmented in such a way as to allow exposure to the air, giving her smoke a means of exit through and around the armor itself. The armor is on par with a kevlar vest, useful for small arms fire and blunt trauma but relying more on its users natural strengths than extreme defense.

Friends/Allies
Fulminate - Oliver Adair was the hero known as Fulminate back in the 1970s, where he was a staunch advocate for the Black Panther Movement and similar civil rights organizations of the time. Nearly Payton's opposite, Oliver is ruled by his emotions and often states 'I am inseperable from my cause'. Though retired, he has taken on the role of Payton's legal guardian and mentor in the heroing field.
Deviate - A classmate in the short lived Jr. PRIMUS program, later a friend. Despite a significant gap in personality, Payton has begun to trust in the strength of Deviate's principles. Plus she just likes him.
Enemies
Chorus: A villain previously associated with Fulminate and the bearer of the Locus Sound. Prone to monologues, much to Payton's chagrin.
