Black Mask is an American costumed crime fighter operating in Vibora Bay, Florida. The current Black Mask is actually the tenth in a lineage handed down from one Black Mask to the next since the 18th century. Black Mask X is the first woman to bear the name.

Secret Identity
Black Mask X is actually Jennifer Ward, a freelance magazine writer & horror novelist. Her identity is known to a small circle of friends, but otherwise not known to the public.
Lineage
Black Mask X, Jennifer Ward, is a descendant of the first Black Mask, John Michael Ward (1755-1810) who lived in New England during the Revolutionary War. The first Black Mask took on a masked persona in order to commit acts of sabotage against the British colonial government. Black Mask became an agent of General George Washington himself. When John Michael Ward passed the mantle down to his son Timothy, the focus of Black Mask became one of vigilante justice against criminals, rather than acts of rebellion.
When the fifth Black Mask, James Lee Ward, was killed in the wild west in 1876, his sidekick Marvin Carr became the sixth Black Mask. Carr retired 20 years later. James Lee Ward's son Jason became the seventh Black Mask.
Jennifer Ward's father, David Matthew Ward, was the ninth Black Mask, and he operated primarily in Chicago, IL. After losing his wife in an accident, David raised their only child Jennifer, but the lack of a male heir left open the question of who would be David's successor as Black Mask. David did not want to see his only child put in harm's way and tried to dissuade her from seeking to be Black Mask. For David there was also appeal in maintaining the illusion that Black Mask was possibly the same immortal man fighting crime in America for over 200 years. However, Jennifer's determination and tireless training made it impossible to deny her as the true heir to her family's heritage.
The tenth Black Mask established herself in Vibora Bay to stand apart from her forebears. At present, she has no child to succeed her, and is in no hurry to produce an heir.
Methods
Black Mask X, like her predecessors, has no actual super powers. She relies upon her Tae Kwon Do skills and a handful of non-lethal gadgets when she has to fight, but Black Mask's greatest asset is her intelligence. Black Mask has a keen understanding of the criminal mind, knowledge of criminal psychology, and forensic science. One of Black Mask's greatest assets is a network of contacts throughout Vibora Bay of people from all walks of life - police officers, homeless, UNTIL agents, and even "small fish" criminal informants.
Feeling outclassed by super-powered villains, Black Mask focuses on street crime & organized crime.
Black Mask adheres to a code that she will not kill in her pursuit of justice.
No objections have been raised by Black Mask when law enforcement officers take credit for her collars.
Equipment
Black Mask keeps the following gear with her to aid in her crime-fighting:
- Gas Grenade Pistol - This has several non-lethal modes to assist in a range of scenarios
- Knockout gas
- Tear gas
- Black smoke
- Throwing Disks - These can be used for ricochet attacks
- Swingline Gun - For use in climbing or swinging, or sometimes as a makeshift weapon
- Rebreather - Essential so as not to succumb to her own gas grenade attacks
- Padded Costume - Offers some small protection against blunt attacks
