Origin Story
FV-Origin Story.png

Born and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Iliana Doranayevskaya took a liking to ice skating at a very young age. She quickly became quite good at it, and had started competitive figure skating by the age of 10. At a mere 13 years of age, she was chosen by then 17 year-old champion Dimitri Comarov to be his pair skating partner. The pair was considered Olympic material, and four years laters, after winning countless regional championships, they made the Russian Figure Skating Olympic Team. Over the years their working partnership had blossomed into a romantic one as well, and soon after Iliana's 18th birthday, the couple got married in a Russian Orthodox Church ceremony. The couple first settled in the Comarov family's dacha (which is to say a Russian country house normally used as a second home), a charmingly rustic cottage located on the outskirts of a small village north of Saint Petersburg.

About a month later, on the evening of December 24th (though not technically Christmas Eve, since in Russia the Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas on January 7th), the married couple was out for an after-dinner, romantic, evening stroll around the nearby, iced-over, big lake where they often practiced their skating routines during the daytime. Just when they were rounding the farther side of the lake, out of the woods jumped a white, furry, man-sized, wolf-like beast that attacked them without warning. It was an Arctic Werewolf, a rare and elusive breed of lycanthrope found only in nordic regions, which often possesses supernatural cryokinetic abilities. Dimitri pushed Iliana aside to protect her and tried to take on their attacker, but the beast made quick work of eviscerating him. For a second Iliana just stood there, in complete shock, having just witnessed her beloved, newly wedded husband get so brutally murdered in front of her disbelieving eyes, and the Werewolf quickly turned his attention to her.

Fearing for her life she turned and tried to run away, but the beast grabbed her and took off with her back into the woods. Struggling was no use as she was no match for the massive wolfman who effortlessly took her to his makeshift den in the woods, a little icy grotto where animal and human bones, picked clean, lay scattered on the ground. There the white Werewolf used his sharp-as-knives claws to shred Iliana's clothes as she screamed in fear and protest. The beast easily overpowered her and mounted her, now violating her in the most obscene way, so short a time after killing the man she loved.

At the moment of climax, the Arctic Werewolf raised his head and howled, as if at the moon, letting go of his grip on her hands, and it was then that a desperate Iliana managed to grab hold of her silver heart pendant--the very one Dimitri had given her many years ago when they had started dating--and after ripping it from her neck she plunged it into her assailant's neck, right in the jugular. The cold silver when right in, like a searing hot knife into butter. With a second stroke she equally easily slashed the beast's whole throat open in a scarlet shower of blood spraying all over her naked body and on the cold, white, snow-covered ground. Still totally in shock, she just layed there. Her ragged breath, the Werewolf's quickly dwindling, blood-gurgling sounds and the howling winds outside the icy cave the only sounds breaking the silence of the Russian winter night.

Cold. It was the first thing that the dazed Iliana could feel. The icy beast's blood splattered on her naked flesh made it all the worse now. Regaining her composure was a task beyond her at this point, but her survival instinct nonetheless kicked in. She retrieved the silver pendant from the gashing throat of the lycanthrope, noticing just how easily, as if supernaturally, it carved the flesh of the beast, she started to skin the furry hide of the Werewolf as fast as she could. The cold heart pendant easily parted the lycanthrope's hide as if the skin cells were repelled by the silver metal. Using the bloodied pelt as a makeshift garment she wrapped it around herself and went into the cold, dark, winter night.

The stunning Iliana Comarova, after she became the Frozen Vixen.

The blizzard that had been forecast on the news for the next morning made an early appearance. Or perhaps it was now later than Iliana realized. The winds picked up strength, and speed, lashing her barely covered body with iced snowflakes that felt like a million little knives tearing at her exposed, raw flesh. After a little of this treatment from Mother Nature she stopped feeling anything, she even felt warm it seemed, numb, and tired. Oh so tired. Each step sinking deeply in the snow making it harder to take the next step. Her body finally gave up, she fell into the snowy embrace of the ground, soon to be covered in the cold, white mantle of winter.

Iliana should have died there--would have died--of exposure, were it not for the strange processes happening inside her body. The Arctic Werewolf's bodily fluids, from the saliva he had slobbered all over her face during that obscene act, the seed he shot deep inside her womb and the jugular blood that splattered all over her at the moment of her revenge, as well as the beast's own hide now covering parts of her exposed flesh, combined with the extreme cold and the hypothermia that resulted, triggered that process. A chemical reaction occurred, that precipitated a cellular mutation, essentially triggered by the supernatural energy contained in the lycanthrope's fluids, skin and fur, as well as the cold of the snow and ice blanketing her.

On the morning of December 25th, when children in the Western world were awaking to mountains of gifts under the Christmas tree, Iliana Comarova awoke and emerged from a snowbank, to find herself alone in the woods, skin ice cold, wearing a tattered white pelt now glued to her body by coagulated blood and ice. The blizzard had subsided by then, and as her eyes adjusted to the light she saw white shapes moving towards her. She was no longer as alone as she thought. Soon she was surrounded by a small squad of men dressed in military-style, padded, snow-camouflage uniforms. She was rescued. Or so she assumed.

The men escorted her to a nearby hidden military base. The only sign she saw marked the place as a SPAT compound. The Soviet Paranormal & Alien Taskforce, a throwback to the Cold War era, that was now considered obsolete and no longer officially sanctioned by the Russian Army. It had even kept it's USSR Red Army designation. But the men escorting her weren't answering most of her questions, and she was put in a small room she would have deemed to be a holding cell of some sort. An older man, though still in surprisingly good physical shape, eventually came to see her. He had four stars on his shoulder insignia. He identified himself as General Borloff. He asked Iliana many questions while not being as forthcoming himself. He seemed very interested in the pelt she was wearing and asked questions about her knowledge of mythical beasts. She had few answers to give, and was reluctant to give any in her current state of mind.

When he finally left the room she heard him talk to some of the men who had brought her in, and she realized they had been tracking the Arctic Werewolf; they were not sent to find or rescue her as she had first thought. The General was clearly unhappy the beast had been killed, and she heard mentions of tests, and possible vivisection and realized they meant on her! She also realized she shouldn't have been able to hear the conversation, and wasn't sure she actually heard it. It felt like it had occurred inside her own head. When men in labcoats came in the small room, accompanied by heavily armed soldiers she realized what was happening. She followed them but as soon as she saw an opportunity, she ran.

Her escape was soon thwarted by many more soldiers that tried to rein her in. Without realizing what she was doing, ice was coming out of her hands, as if pouring out of her palms, and flying towards of her would-be captors. One soldier came in from behind and grabbed her. Reflex--or PTSD--kicked in, hard. She spun around and screamed. She was startled to find that she blew cold air out of her mouth, so cold it froze the poor soldier in place! A squad came down the corridor around the corner, as they were in sight she lifted her hands and, as if by magic, cage-like ice structures materialized around them, immobilizing them as well. Confused herself, as they themselves all were, she nonetheless had the presence of mind to keep running, making her way out of the compound using her newfound powers and abilities when necessary.

Going down the hill outside the SPAT base, Iliana slipped and fell and started rolling down, soon turning into a giant snowball, and realized she could travel much faster this way. She rolled back to her cottage, but there she saw more soldiers wearing the same uniform as her "rescuers" so she kept rolling away, all the way to the village. She went straight to the police who pulled guns on her and tried to arrest her for the savage murder of her husband Dimitri. She tried to explain what had happened to her but the police officers seemed intent on charging her with murder. It appeared that Borloff had anticipated her attempt to get help from the police and had framed her for the killing.

Iliana Comarova featured on the cover of Model magazine.

She ran again, this time back to Saint Petersburg where she went to find Carlo Cavaleoli, renowned international fashion designer. He was spending Christmas there since they were scheduled to meet later in the week. Carlo had been working on designs for the pair skating team's competition outfits since he was Iliana's favorite designer and frequent collaborator, as well as her friend and admirer. He had also designed costumes for some of the world's leading superheroes so he knew a thing or two about superpowers. Surely, he was the only one who could help her now.

Cavaleoli knew someone from Millenium City, a superhero who had the ability to teleport long distances through the creation of wormholes, and he gave him a call. Within the hour Doctor Doorway had smuggled Iliana and Carlo out of Russia and into PRIMUS offices, where their medical experts and scientists examined and cared for Iliana. In the following days, PRIMUS in collaboration with UNTIL granted Iliana refugee status and eventually--months later--American citizenship, since they cleared Iliana of all criminal charges as her version of what happened was confirmed by powerful telepaths who deeply probed her mind. And as it turns out, the SPAT was already suspected to be involved in nefarious research and development that is considered to be against international laws and is now considered a rogue government agency..

She learned more about her new condition, about her Mutated Intrinsic Xenophysiology (MIX), for she was now a MIXer herself. After further training at PRIMUS and UNTIL facilities which lasted several months, Iliana was registered officially as a cryokinetic superheroine. She chose the name Frozen Vixen, as she had already been dubbed the Skating Vixen by the Russian press, owing to her sexy outfits and daring yet sensual pair skating numbers she used to perform with her late husband. Carlo Cavaleoli offered her a modeling job working for him, as her figure skating career was now over since she would not be allowed to compete as an ice mutant, nor would she want to do so since the death of her husband. The newly dubbed Frozen Vixen asked her friend and new employer Carlo Cavaleoli to design her a superheroine costume, and she insisted that he included some of the Arctic Werewolf fur from the hide that played a part in the acquisition of her powers, as a constant reminder of their origin and cost, as well as of her triumphant vengeance over the ravaging, murderous beast. In time Iliana would meet other MIXers and form the Formidable Five super team, which eventually would grow to become the Formidable Force super group.

Powers
FV-Powers.png

Frozen Vixen has a supernaturally triggered Mutated Intrinsic Xenophysiology which has altered her brain chemistry and architecture, which in turn affect how brainwaves can psionically alter reality. Her particular mutation has granted her cryokinesis, i.e. it has intrinsically connected her to cold, ice and snow, as well as given her a mental connection to Arctic Beasts (animals with the same MIX). Her own Cryokinetic Powers include:

Cryokinetic Arctic White Wolf affectionately named Doge psionically expressing his own thought processes.
  • The ability to lower tempratures, her own body's internal temperature as well as that around her, to sub-zero levels. This includes the side effect of usually crystalizing water particles around her, turning them into gently falling snowflakes.
  • The ability to encase her whole body in ice, and even to turn it entirely into ice, which makes her nearly invulnerable when she does that. Although turning her powers on herself like that makes her less efficient as an ice wielder and projector, so it's a trade-off: more resisting power equals less damaging power.
  • The ability to generate ice and project it at impressive velocities. Also to blow cold air to chill and freeze foes.
  • The ability to materialize ice structures to form barriers or cages to trap foes.
  • The ability to send shockwaves that are not only damaging in themselves but that can also destabilize said ice structures, collapsing them and turning them into ice shrapnel as it were.
  • The ability to use lower temperature destabilization in foes to affect her own cellular regeneration at highly accelerated metabolic rates. This effect will often benefit others near her as well.
  • The ability to encase herself into a ball of snow, allowing her to roll at prodigious speeds.
  • The ability to generate a thick sheet of ice on which she can slide around, even to levitate it so that it can emulate a type of flight.
  • The ability to communicate telepathically with other cryokinetic MIXers and, albeit summarily, with cryokinetic animals (which are colloquially dubbed Arctic Beasts). That communication with non-human cryokinetics is usually more empathic than telepathic, and often takes the form of mental control. Iliana keeps an Arctic Wolf as a pet who sometimes accompanies her into battle. She named him Doge, surely after the chief magistrate of Venice or Genoa, and most certainly not after the popular internet meme. That would just be silly.
