He is a demonic being summoned to Xzianthia long ago and chose to stay because he liked the natural world on Volcanus. He's is an exception to the rule that all demons are evil, and while his moral compass is strange he has a strict code he adheres to. He values both life and death, and finds undeath to be truly offensive. He also knows well what the Nha Si'Marat do to a realm as they take it over, and does not agree with their end goal of the "cleansing" of life, nor their practice of creating undead.
He got lucky, instead of meeting just any trigger-happy adventuring hero, he met Alyssa Q'Uzixola. When he made no threatening moves when he first met her, and she didn't either, they started talking. He offered to help her complete a few of her quests which had shared goals, much to the suspicion of Alyssa's existing adventuring party companions. Over time, his strict code of conduct proves to make him one of the most reliable, trustworthy, and honorable members of the party.
He and Ynnea do not get along, both from a historical/mystic origin background standpoint (demons & angels don't get a long) and because Gorothok enjoys killing while Ynnea would rather save a life with no bloodshed. In particular, Ynnea believes strongly in the existence of God, whereas Gorothok does not and doesn't care about wondering about it either. He views her as illogically idealist and a dileusional celestial, and she views him as a savage monster who is likely to turn against them if it suits his needs better (as he once worked for the evil Nha Si'Marat before he defected). These fear prove unfounded and overtime the two of them grow to tolerate and understand each other, with a lot of negotiating from Alyssa.
One of the big turning points for when the rest of the party began to accept him was when they had to fight some other demons. When Ynnea asked if that bothered him to fight his own kind, he replied, "No. You all are my kind now, not them."
