Orlaskathut is a shaman and witch-doctor from a secluded community of Earth Drakes. Prior to Orlaskathut's contact with humans in Millennium City, the existence of these Earth Drakes was unknown. Still largely untrusting of humankind, Orlaskathut has only disclosed the basics of his people to those who have asked.

Origins

Community

Orlaskathut contacting spirits of the desert in a sub-terrain Reike shrine.
The specifics of how Orlaskathut became the shaman for his tribe are unknown, as are the specifics of how he grew up in his community. However, he has agreed to give anthropologists at the University of Detroit some insights about how his community works.

The Earth Drake tribe, or as they call themselves, the Reike, live deep in the center of the Saharan wilderness. Drakes can survive without water for weeks, and usually reach maturity by 26 years of age. Usually, males trek out to far reaches of the desert to search for oasises and food, while females and a select few males stay back at the village to keep it guarded. Two specific figures, the chieftain and shaman, have special jobs back at the village. The Chieftain, usually the largest and strongest of the males, gets to have first-pick for a mate and delegates the mates that other members of the tribe should get. The Shaman, on the other hand, are specially-bred tribesmen who have gone through trials to prove themselves to the gods of the desert. Those shamans who are deemed worthy by the gods are imbued by powers from any of four of them: Orilei, King of sands, Paica, Mother of far waters, Kalatan, Bringer of storms, and Lammei, Lord of construction. Shamans are usually the last line of defense for the Reike people, and usually have the highest concentration of sheer power in the tribe. They also are special in that, to maximize the odds of Shaman blood making it to the next generation, they are able to mate with any other member of the tribe.

Reike technology is quite advanced for being such a small community. Males are trained in the ways to construct narrow, covered canals that lead from far oasises to the village in order to help tribe members at home cultivate small farms. Also, thanks to the advanced abilities of the shaman, Reike people have also been able to erect large, stone temples in honor to their gods, shaping them from solid rocks far below the sands. Usually, these structures are erected by shamans who were able to hone the power of Lammei.

Orlaskathut admits that he is late in the shaman's life cycle; he states that he has already raised several potential shamans to help protect his village, but that he now senses new dangers within the world; ones that might threaten not only the Reike people, but the very gods that he draws power from. As he states, it is this reason he has gone on his trek to seek the aid of humans.

First Contact

Orlaskathut making his way across the Southwestern Desert.
Orlaskathut's first contact with humans was with UNTIL forces in Madagascar, who were currently investigating the development of a VIPER base in the area. Orlaskathut was attracted to the location, due to sensing impressive dark energies emanating from the locale, threatening to change the fate of the planet. Wasting no time, Orlaskathut bid his tribesmen farewell, and put them in the hands of his capable pupils. Heading southeast by flight, he arrived in the area and was promptly greeted by confused UNTIL soldiers, mistakening Orlaskathut for another one of VIPER's nefarious genetic monsters. The shaman, too tired from flying to fight back, was subdued by the soldiers and brought back to Millennium City for research. After DNA tests were returned, reporting no evidence of sequences resembling anything either human or reptilian, the accusation was dropped.

Orlaskathut's first point of business, now having been captured by UNTIL, was to ask what had become of the energies he had felt in Madagascar. As it turned out, during Orlaskathut's unconsciousness, other heroes had managed to clear out the VIPER base and stop the supreme serpent from awakening the Spirit Serpent. This soon became a moot point, however, as Orlaskathut began to sense even more dangerous energies emanating from the south; in Vibora Bay.

Though he was raring to go, having been well-treated by UNTIL during his captivity, The Champions wanted to have a short word with the mysterious visitor. They wanted to get a better handle on his peoples' origins and habits, and understand if they were to be trusted. Orlaskathut, having plenty of similar questions for the Champions, reluctantly agreed. Thus, through their meeting, Orlaskathut told the Champions particular details of his tribe, while in return, the Champions permitted the shaman to legally fight and protect the people with his powers.

At that point, Orlaskathut would have made his leave, but soon he was assaulted by VIPER soldiers who had taken interest in his physiology after they had heard news of his arrival in the city. This time, however, the Shaman was ready for assault, and swiftly used his control of the Stones, the Sands, and the Storms to subdue the soldiers. The collateral damage was high, and people were initially mortified by the entire city intersection that had been ripped asunder by the battle. As one Reike proverb goes, however "Only the absent-minded shaman leaves loose stones", and like a good Shaman, Orlaskathut was able to quickly repair the damage that had been done. His first foray into heroism among humans was a success.

Orlaskathut's actions and his origins soon became big news among the heroism circuit. Thus, when Orlaskathut arrived in Vibora Bay after his flight south, he was readily welcomed by the locals. Having built some funds from helping with construction work, as well as providing pharmaceutical support to locals, he managed to get himself a comfortable brownstone apartment on the eastern side of the city. Though he does make an effort to remain a good citizen, he always remains vigilant; his senses do not lie. The city of Vibora holds immense dormant power, and he knows that just some day, something disastrous just might happen with it.

Orlaskathut is highly intelligent; he learned the English language only a couple of minutes after hearing it, and has excellent spatial mental capacities, capable of solving geometrical problems and constructing sturdy structures in seconds. Having grown up in a village environment, Orlaskathut is also a great team-player; if he understands an individual's capabilities and has their full attention, he can serve as an excellent team taskmaster. Despite his good tactical application of his allies, he seems to lack some degree of empathy, viewing allies more as tools than actual people. It is unknown if this is simply an artifact of how Earth Drake psychology works, or if Orlaskathut views humankind as inferior.

Another quirk of his is his tendency to underestimate females. Since there have never been female chieftains or shamans in the history of his tribe, this sort of prejudice is somewhat understandable. Finally, thanks to the privileges he received as a Shaman of his tribe, he tends to be a little condescending to others in general. He views himself as the top of the pack in most cases, unless another explicitly manages to best him in combat, and (definitely a side-effect of being allowed to couple with all tribe members) seems to come on a bit strong to some women. Regardless, he's slowly been learning to back off in these instances, and generally has learned how to stay out of trouble.

Combat Specifications

This mighty shaman cuts his foes down with coarse rock, cutting sands, and raging winds.
Orlaskathut is an Earth Drake. Standing a full head taller than most human males, this size increase offers him a bit of extra strength. Orlaskathut can lift up to 322 pounds, and can keep running quickly for 3 to 4 hours. In addition, he requires very little hydration, and can wander a scorching desert for 2 weeks before becoming dehydrated or fatigued. Still, his physical capabilities are not too impressive; he is actually quite weak for his kind, and is certainly not too agile in a quick melee brawl.

What Orlaskathut lacks in his physical capabilities, he more than makes up for in his Manipulation of Earth, Sand, and Wind. Having been imbued by gods of construction, sand, and storms has granted him magnificent abilities in these classes, making him a veritable triple-threat. His stone-altering abilities enable him to ruthlessly batter and crush enemies from a distance, while winds allow him to twist and rip at enemies defenses. Finally, the sands he can summon forth can shift the very ground out from beneath his enemies, or be sent flying by the winds he generates to blind enemies where they stand.

Not only is Orlaskathut highly adept at destructive magic, but he is also an impressive healer. Always prepared to do what it takes to help allies, he can use specialized magic from his shaman's staff to invigorate allies with his abilities. He also can use such abilities on himself to keep going in a battle, which, combined with his naturally tough hide, make him quite difficult to bring down without some degree of stopping power.

Orlaskathut's long legs mean that he can run a bit faster than a human. His true mobility, however, is blessed by his flight. Though Earth Drake's don't have wings, Orlaskathut can still fly thanks to his shaman training, and can move through the air at a speed of around 22 miles per hour.

OOCCCOCOCOC

  • Before Earth's release, Orlaskathut was a character who used Ice powers colored Yellow/Orange.
  • His staff is only a decoration piece, thanks to the fact there's no healing abilities that come from a staff. Whee.
