History

Chrysalis

Samantha Pender thought she was a normal High School girl. In fact, she was a dreadfully ordinary girl. If one had to choose a single word to describe Sam, it would be 'Plain'. She made average grades in her classes, and stayed out of trouble, but she didn't have any remarkable skills or talents. She sometimes had dreams of stumbling across some hidden talent but it seemed as if she was doomed to a life of mediocrity. It didn't help her self-esteem that she was hardly a looker, with flat mousy brown hair and a modest figure. She wasn't overweight or ridiculously thin, but she did have a slight stigmatism so she wore glasses or contacts if it was a special occasion.

In her Sophmore year, Samantha discovered she had a rare but degenerative condition that affected her spinal column. A few months later, she was confined to a wheelchair, paralyzed below the hips. Life seemed bleak, and if it wasn't for her strong Catholic faith she would have possibly fallen into despair. But Samantha had always been a devout Catholic and went to church religiously. She even wore a rosary to school, underneath her clothes.

When her Chrysalis came upon her, at first she was scared and confused. But her emotions quickly turned to elation when she discovered that she was ambulatory again - in fact, she felt full of vitality and health she'd never felt before. Her appearance had changed from plain and uninteresting to idyllic and beautiful. It was as if her prayers had at last been answered. To Samantha, this has been sure proof that her faith in the Lord was rewarded. Even after discovering the Changeling nature of her Chrysalis, she has held firm to her belief that it was God's will that she be granted a second chance at life.

And this time, she would be far from plain.

Motley Crew

After her Chrysalis, Samantha discovered that she wasn't the only one in Greensboro to be more than human. In fact, she wasn't even the only one in her High School! Finding succor in the shared comradery and confidence of her fellow supernatural classmates, she forged bonds as strong as family with her friends. The fires of tribulation and adversity tempered these bonds into unbreakable chains that bound them together through thick and thin.

Antagonists presented themselves in the form of the mysterious Technocratic Union, a secret cabal of mages forged upon the bedrock of logic and order with the goal of eradicating all chaos and whimsy from the world. The untried teens cut their teeth on the first encounters with the Technocrats, nearly paying dearly for their inexperience and naivety. But they learned and matured. Thwarting several banal machinations that could have spelled disaster for the town of Greensboro, the young heroes eventually went from playing defensive to taking the offense. They struck back at a Technocratic factory producing mechanical hunters that could have been the distant cousins to a popular fictional series of robots designed to hunt down mutants. Discovering that the Union's aims were far greater and terrible in scope than they could have ever imagined before the destruction of the factory, the motley crew of supernaturals somberly set off to London, where the front lines were drawn in a secret war.

About Samantha

Samantha Pender. Queen Arthuria Pendragon. Wielder of Excalibur, Bearer of Pendwyr, Rightful Ruler of Camelot, Sidhe of House Gwydion and Dragonslayer.

Samantha has a myriad of titles, far more than she ever thought she would have at the age of eighteen and still finishing High School. She's somehow amassed more responsibilities than any young girl has a right to. Sovereign of a small kingdom, guardian of a sword straight out of the story books, and not to mention the pressures that come with simply being a faerie noble.

She's a deeply religious girl, despite her faerie nature and the bone-deep knowledge that magic is indeed real. She's an avid reader of fantasy novels and enjoys poetry. Her mother forced her to take up violin lessons when she was 8, though she stopped playing around four years later. Her recent Chrysalis has reawakened her interest in the Arts, however, and she's dusted off her violin lessons and taken up singing as well. A recording company has signed her on for a recording contract after she was discovered during a regional talent scouting audition. Her fantastical beauty helped her land a job as a model as well, though her career is still new and budding.

Merits

Noble Bearing (1pt Merit) Some people were born to lead. You are one of them. Were you born of noble blood? Perhaps not, but you still act as if you were, and often you impress others as a result. Your true heritage doesn't matter; people respect you on sight. In game terms, this Merit lowers Social roll difficulties in conciliatory situations by two. In story terms, it gives you an air of respectability no matter where you are or what you do. It also makes you a target for jealousy, gossip and assassination attempts, but that's the cost of charisma…

Enchanting Voice (2pt Merit) There is something about your voice cannot ignore. When you command, they are cowed. When you seduce they swoon. Whether thunderous, gentle, pausing or simply talking, your voice commands attention. The difficulties of all die rolls involving the use of the voice to pursued, charm or command are reduced by two.

True Love (1pt. Merit, Changeling: Second Edition, p. 161)You have discovered, and possibly lost (at least temporarily) a true love. Nonetheless, this love provides joy in an arid existence usually devoid of such enlightened emotions. Whenever you are suffering, in danger or dejected, the thought of your true love is enough to give you the strength to persevere. In game terms, this love allows you to succeed automatically on any Willpower roll, but only when you are actively striving to protect or come closer to your true love. Also, the power of your love may be powerful enough to protect you from other supernatural forces (Storyteller's discretion). However, your true love may also be a hindrance and require aid (or even rescue) from time to time. Be forwarned: this is a most exacting Merit to play over the course of a chronicle.

Flaws

Nightmares (1pt. Flaw, Changeling: Second Edition, p. 154) You experience horrendous nightmares every time you sleep, and memories of them haunt you in your waking hours. Sometimes the nightmares are so bad they cause you to lose one die on all your actions for the next night (Storyteller's discretion). Some of the nightmares may be so intense that you mistake them for reality. A crafty Storyteller will be quick to take advantage of this. ✦ Samantha has reoccurring nightmares of getting those close to her killed and/or getting hurt so badly that she is paralyzed again like she was before her Chrysalis

Overconfident (1pt. Flaw, Changeling: Second Edition, p. 154) You have an exaggerated and unshakable opinion of your own worth and capabilities. You never hesitate to trust your abilities, even if situations where you risk defeat. Because your abilities may not be enough, such overconfidence can be very dangerous. When you do fail, you quickly find someone or something else to blame. If you are convincing enough, you can infect others with your overconfidence.

Surreal Quality (2pt. Flaw, Changeling: Second Edition, p. 159) Though the Mists still protect you from mortal detection, there is something about you that mortal find fascinating. At inappropriate times, they will stare at you and strike up conversation in hopes of getting to know you better. Worse still, those mortals who are of less savory nature will choose you over other potential targets for their illicit acts.

The Bard's Tongue (1pt. Flaw, Changeling: Second Edition, p. 163) You speak the truth, uncannily so. Things you say tend to come true. This is not a facility for blessing and cursing, or an Effect that can be ruled by any conscious control. However, at least once per story, an uncomfortable truth regarding any current situation will appear in your head and through your lips. To avoid speaking prophesy, you must expend a Willpower point and take a Health Level from the strain of resisting (especially if you bite a hole in your tongue).

● Phobia (Severe) (3pt. Flaw, Changeling: Second Edition, p. 157) You have an overpowering fear of something. Common objects of fear include certain animals, insects, crowds, open spaces, confined spaces, heights, and so on. You must make a Willpower roll not to freak out when faced with the object of your fear. The difficulty depends on the circumstances. If you fail, the roll, you must retreat in terror from the object of fear. If you score less than three successes, you will not approach it. The Storyteller has final say which over which phobias are allowed in a chronicle. ✦ Arachnophobia - Samantha is deathly afraid of spiders. Brrrr~
