The Shadow Trickster

Legends of the Shadow Trickster stretch back thousands of years. It is believed the first account of the Shadow Trickster was in the court of Pharaoh Tal'Raqet. Pictographs showed the appearance of a beautiful sorceress who "wore the skin of midnight". Tal'Raqet was enchanted by the woman, and when she offered to become his advisor, he eagerly accepted. Although the Trickster has worn many names and guises, this is the first recorded appearance, and it is thus believed that the name she gave is her true name, Athanaptra.

Tal'Raqet became infatuated with Athanaptra, forgoing ruling his people to bring her gifts, starting off with jewelry and slaves, before forcing his people to create monuments to her. Athanaptra continued to advise him, but her words were anything but wise. She convinced the Pharaoh to tighten his laws on his people, before planting the idea that his people were going to steal her away from him. Tal'Raqet's laws only became more and more absurd, until his people eventually had enough, and rose up, marching on the palace and murdered Tal'Raqet. In his last moments, Athanaptra knelt by his side, drew forth his soul, and consumed it before the very eyes of the entire mob.

The pictographs from here onwards are unclear. They claim the royal guard were transformed into Sha, the unknown beast associated with Set, suggesting Athanaptra may have been affiliated with the egyptian god of chaos. The Sha then attacked and killed most of the mob, and Tal'Raqet's empire crumbled as the survivors of the massacre fled to the winds. What happened to Athanaptra afterwards is unknown, as is the fate of the survivors, and the location of the now labelled "Cursed Citadel".

The Endless Winter

The norse poet Kormi once wrote a very strange tale. It tells of a year where a strange woman came to the region. A "coal" skinned woman with hair "woven from the rays of the dusk sun" fell at the gates of the hold of a Jarl Svarleif, Kormi's home. She seemed weak, and pleaded for help, claiming to be pursued by the "Muspelli", Fire Giants. However her appearance led the people to mistrust her, considering her a witch, and not to be trusted. So Svarleif refused her aid and closed the gates upon her, telling her that if she had invoked the ire of the Muspelli, they had reason for it.

While it is unwise to trust a witch

It is more foolish to refuse one.

Kormi's tale recounts how from that moment on, it began to snow almost constantly, yet never whipped up into a blizzard or gale. The snow fell for weeks, snowing in the roads for trade caravans to be able to get through, cutting off the hold from the outside world. Their vegetables and plants shrivelled under the relentles cold, making it impossible to harvest or plant more. And not long after, all the livestock apparently went berserk and started killing eachother. Horses, cattle, sheep, all began tearing at eachother wildly. Some of the townspeople were injured and a few even killed in their attempts to rein in the animals. Realising their last food source had just butchered eachother in one day. The people hurried to harvest the animals and preserve what meat they could, hoping the snow would end soon.

It didn't.

The food dwindled or went bad, several more people growing sick from eating rotten food out of desperation, while others began to starve. The snow continued to fall endlessly, the guards couldn't even open the gates of the hold, the snow had lodged and frozen the gates in place. Some of the people began to realise there was another foodstuff left in the hold... eachother.

Some of the people turned to cannibalism, invading the homes of their kinsmen and taking them away. Things only became worse when the others became paranoid of eachother, suspecting others of cannibalism or hoarding food, and further chaos erupted through the hold. Kormi's account says he locked himself in his cellar, surviving for a week on a rat he found. When he emerged, the snow had stopped and begun to melt. The gates hung open, no longer frozen shut, and the cannibals were nowhere to be seen. The hold held around 200 people according to Kormi, and of them, 26 survived, cannibals not included. When the survivors went to the Jarl's longhouse, they found his body, dry, gaunt and shrivelled, as if something had sucked the very life from him.

One wonders if Athanaptra had targeted this hold, and the claim of Muspelli was simply a lie, or if Svarlief's people were a victim of circumstance, punished for their disapproval of her. Furthermore, if she really was being pursued by the Muspelli, what did she do to them?
