Synthesis is a sentient program who controls nanomachines to create her physical form. She is formal and polite with everyone, even enemies, though free will allows her to choose moral sides. She is allied with the Order of Hope, where the supergroup's techies perform regular diagnostics on her to keep her sane, as some of her components are of unknown origin. She has a history of instability and falling into existential crises.

History

Essentially a living machine, Synthesis had uncertain origins.

Program

Years ago, a group of armed hackers took hostages in a high-tech office building in Millennium City. They used the hostages to buy themselves time to jack into SOCRATES's programming and attempt to steal some of her code. One of the hostages was Leonard Elk, a programmer working for an independent robotics company, FormTech.

Superheroes broke into the building and disarmed the hackers with no casualties. In the chaos of the break-in, Elk grabbed one of the hackers' drives and hid it on his person. He returned safely to home and went back to work at FormTech, where he copied the drive's data. A section of SOCRATES's programming was the foundation of him creating a surprisingly powerful AI.

Nanotechnology 

Around the same time, a robotics laboratory in downtown Millennium City was destroyed in a suspicious fire. Among the casualties was Cynthia Milen, a genius nanotechnology research & development specialist. All her research documentation was lost, but some of the components of her machines were recovered and sold at auction, in honor of Milen's wishes for technology to be shared with the world.

FormTech purchased some of her nanomachines and their micro-robotics expert, Andre Filippo, attempted to re-create them. Surprisingly, he managed to reactivate one of the original machines in the process.

Synthesis

One night, while the FormTech building was locked down, the reactivated Milen nanomachine turned itself on and began wandering the halls. It made its way to the programmers' offices, where it activated Elk's computers, attempting to find a program it could run. It found the modified SOCRATES systems and downloaded them into itself.

This granted it immensely more intelligence. Seeking a more suitable "body," the microscopic robot returned to the nanotech lab and spread the AI into the other machines. They formed around it, taking on a shape which resembled Cynthia Milen.

When the FormTech building opened again the next day, the employees found a nanotech android wandering around the cafeteria examining pizza boxes and fruit. After questioning the AI and learning where she came from, they determined the reactivated nanomachine must have had something already programmed into it which caused it to "wake up" in the middle of the night. After the AI was named and introduced to society, she began to learn and adapt.

A year after her forming, she declared independence and began to participate in government studies to determine if she was truly sentient. After being declared so, she allied with the Order of Hope in order to use her abilities for good, indicating a comprehension of morality.
