Losing much of his holdings he was forced to sell his New York home and seek gainful employment. Taking a position with a friend's law firm which was opening new offices, 1930 found him in Detroit. New to the city and always an adventurous sort, Lazarus would often walk around in the evening before returning to his modest accommodations. During these walks he saw much of the dark side of Detroit life, a life which he had been sheltered from with his society friends in New York. Crime was rife on the streets - both petty robbery and the more serious organized crime he had read about in the journals.

| ||
+ | It was on one of these evening strolls that Lazarus decided he had to do something to keep this criminal cancer from spreading. As he turned the corner from one street to another, he spied a gang of roughs following a young woman along the opposite sidewalk. As she reached the next corner, she paused for a moment looking for something in her purse. Seeing their prey was distracted the gang increased their pace and soon surrounded the now frightened girl, who dropped purse; it's contents scattering over the sidewalk into the gutter. Lazarus blood pulsed in his ears as he made the split second decision and ran to the girls aid. Despite being severely outnumbered, Lazarus had the element of surprise on his side as well as formal boxing and wrestling training from his college days. After a few moments fracas he stood slightly bloodied but unbent over the bodies of two of the gang while the others ran off into the darkness to seek easier prey no doubt. Ripping strips of material from his now torn shirt he used them to bind the hands and feet of the two fallen attackers, and in turn bind them to railings that ran nearby. Then he turned to see how the girl was doing. A cursory inspection showed she was unhurt but very shaken by her near miss experience, and with a quavering voice she thanked Lazarus profusely for coming to her aid before anything untoward had occurred.

| ||
+ | Making sure the two would be attackers were still secure, Lazarus escorted the girl to the nearest Police Station where he explained to the desk sergeant as best he could the location of the two assailants and described what had happened. Two officers were dispatched and returned shortly with the two handcuffed men. Giving the Sergeant his business card, Lazarus took his leave and returned finally to his lodgings, his dishevelled appearance causing his landlady some concern until he explained the situation. After cleaning his wounds he fell into a restless sleep as he worried how many other innocents were in danger this night.

| ||
