Vherio Takes Form

Previous Life

Frustratingly little is known about Vherio's former life. Only by speaking with those able to see his incorporeal spirit, and what scant historical records he has found, has he managed to formulate some sort of picture of who he must have been. His spirit appears dressed in a French military coat, around thirty years of age and with a massive festering cannon wound on his lower torso and a gash on his head. His theory so far is that he must have been fighting in the Battle of Waterloo, only to die of complications from the wounds in a market town in Burgundy, France, near the city of Dijon. The house he haunted did not belong to him, however, which suggests he was taken in by someone else. He also knows he must have had money and some kind of education, because he is able to read and write. After his death he haunted his home for 54 years, causing the population to flee and the town to become abandoned. All Vherio remembers of this time is a red mist of primeval rage. He has no idea why he remained on Earth as a poltergeist, but is determined to unearth the rest of his history to find out.

Awakening

As far as Vherio is concerned, his "life" began in the year 1859 after an attempted exorcism by a local priest backfired. The poltergeist Vherio "awoke", fully sentient, over the dead body of his would-be saviour. He found himself bound to the now delapidated building, unable to leave, but still able to manipulate objects around him. After searching the area, he found a small buried urn that contained his own ashes. He found that if he carried the urn with him, he could leave, but only slowly, by rolling it on the ground. Eventually he began constructing a material body around the urn using pieces of the buildings in the abandoned town, allowing himself relatively comfortable humanoid movement. Vherio spent some time in the town unsure what to do next. He read the priest's bible, and, enthused, made his next haunt the town's abandoned chapel. He attempted to find solace and understanding in God.

Spirit of War

At the time of Vherio's awakening, France had just won the Franco-Austrian war, casting the army in a light of power and grandeur. He wished to find purpose, and found it in serving his country in France's land army. While he learned how to operate a firearm, he discovered an affinity for swordsmanship - another skill he must have learned while still alive. Vherio gained a lust for battle and honed his telekinetic skills - but also kept his true existence secret.

Vherio fought in the Crimean. His first large war, however, was the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, which resulted in the formation of Germany. France lost. Hard. Vherio continued to serve, however. He fought in both world wars and as many conflicts in between he could find. He had a thirst for battle that could not be quenched.

Spirit of Fear

By WWII, Vherio's skills had increased massively and he had gained an infamous reputation as a mechanical, unrelenting force of death on the battlefield. Bullets would not hurt him. he would take bombs in his stride and simply ignore poison gas. He had the power to rip the treads off tanks and blow enemy soldiers away at a moment's thought. It is at this time that he donned his mask - a symbol of freedom, death and bloody revolution. It is also at this time he took on the moniker "Revolucion." He swore vengeance on the Nazis after the invasion of his beloved home city, Dijon.

Revolucion headed a team of similarly supernatural soldiers, consisting of Klaus Vesper, a Jewish-German Revenant, the ghost of Chantelle Blackwood and the twins Ivor and Sergei Vastoff, who were vampires. Klaus and Vherio remain staunch allies to this day. Vherio and Chantelle were as close to lovers as one could get without having hormones involved. The four of them harassed supply lines and troops in Axis france (being immune to Totenkopf's anti-superhuman sorcery), and earned a fearful reputation as The Wraithmarchers.

After the end of the second world war, and the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Vherio saw little more point in war. There had been no honour in WWII, times had changed, the cost had been too high, and now a war could be won with the press of a button. He and Chantelle Blackwood retired and, though they could not marry, they began tailoring wedding dresses in a shop in Paris. It was not a successful business, but their living costs were nonexistant. They were, if not at peace, very close to.

Spirit of Vengeance

Such peace did not last forever. Vherio experienced the world's shock when VIPER appeared to the world in 1963, and in 1965, the Qularr attacked Earth. The monstrous batrichoid creature, Doku, destroyed most of Paris and slew much of its popultion with its poisonous breath, including all those Vherio knew and loved. After the attack, Vherio was approached by Klaus Vesper, and enlisted with him in a newly forming organisation that called itself UNTIL - namely UNTIL's Project Stargazer. He swore vengeance upon the Qularr.

Vherio also swore vengeance on the Gadroon when they attacked in 1988, and the Sirians when they attacked... and the Hzeel, the Elder Worms... In fact, Vherio became an intensely hateful guardian of the human race, unable to trust or accept any non-natives or, to a lesser extent, AI.

Guardian of Humanity

While Vherio does not call himself such, he acts as a guardian for all humanity, seeing UNTIL as a like-minded force to aid him as he aids them. He focuses more on extraterrestrial threats to the world, because those, he believes, are the greatest, though having "lived" through WWII, Green Monday and the Battle of Detroit, he does not see humanity as innocent either. Due to his abrasive viewpoints and lack of willingness to listen to reason concerning them, he and Chantelle drifted apart in the 90s. He does not know where she is now.

UNTIL Agent

Originally they had only a loose association with UNTIL, instead choosing vigilantism in Paris, but Vherio and Vesper became full UNTIL agents in 2011. Vherio knows many significantly ranking UNTIL members, though none in the Americas. He has not operated in the west until now.

Called to Millenium City by Vesper, Vherio waits on him for feedback about a lead he was following that may be pointing to an alien infiltration in the making. Frustratingly, Vesper's messages to Vherio became more and more cryptic, before stopping altogether.

Liberator

Seeing that he would be in America for a long while, Vherio decided to join with a newly (re)forming supergroup, The Liberators, after finding one of their flyers in a subway. Vherio is a willing and powerful member of the team, but holds few fantasies about staying with them should UNTIL call him away. He also holds a deep, hidden grudge against Tielrah Ser'ai, one of its members. Being an alien, Vherio cannot help but be wary of her even though UNTIL formally allowed her to stay.

War Machine

Using his ghostly powers, Vherio is able to perform many feats, including manipulation of matter, posession of mechanical entities and seeing spirits and auras. He uses a large number of artefacts and gadgets in order to take down his foes.

Spectral Powers

Invisibility: Vherio's ghostly form is invisible to the naked eye.

Vector Telekinesis: While not true telekinesis, to most people this ability appears to be. Vherio creates invisible extensions to his spirit that resemble tentacles with human hands at their tip, capable of grabbing, lifting and throwing objects as heavy as two and a half tons. He can also go the other way and manipulate tiny objects with extreme precision, such as the workings of a watch, lock, car or automaton.

Technological Possession: Vherio can sieze control of machines, including robots and power armour within about 30 metres of his urn, by inhabiting them as he would his own body. He uses this ability most of the time in order to control the mechanical avatars that belong to him, but in combat against a robot or power-armoured person he is virtually invincible.

Spirit Vision: Due to his spectral nature, Vherio is able to see auras and other spirits that are invisible to the human eye. His vision works in such a way that he cannot see colour, and life energies are instead the "colours" he sees by. This makes people the most colourful things in his world, but on the other hand makes it very difficult for him to read text.

Interference: Vherio projects a halo of electromagnetic radiation around himself which plays merry hell with any electronic devices in his vicinity. This is especially true for cameras, which glitch out and display ghostly forms before sparking and shorting out. Robots, radios and computers without EMP shielding suffer a similar fate.

Soul Consumption: In order to gain immediate power, Vherio can absorb the tenuous spiritual energy of other organisms, killing them in the process. Usually, this is from plants and small animals. Vherio refuses to consume sentient souls, seeing it as a deed worse than cannibalism.

Gadgets

Avatars: Vherio's standard avatar is made primarily out of brass and dressed in stylish clothes he made himself. Under the clothes, the avatar has a large number of cavities and compartments for supplies and devices, as well as a central, removable brass sphere mounted in his chest which contains his urn of ashes. Devices carried in the avatar include a geiger counter, an electric torch, a small toolkit, an EMP-shielded radio( for talking to The Liberators) and two first aid kits. He also carries two or more swords from a large personal collection of his at all times. Vherio finds this avatar the most practical due to it being light, flexible and easy to repair. He currently has three identical avatars of this type.

Swords: Vherio has a large collection of swords, both historical and modern. Few of them see real use, but those that do are mainly two French rapiers; duelling blades. He has also been seen using heavy shortswords, Japanese katana, laser blades and his personal favourite; a spy sword hidden within a functioning black umbrella. Vherio's spirit actually wields two spectral swords, and uses them in synchronicity with his avatar's movements. These invisible blades can directly cut the soul, slay the undead and pierce some arcane wards, but it requires immense concentration on Vherio's part to be able to wield his spectral blades and real blades separately.

War Avatar: Built towards the end of World War Two, the war avatar is built out of the same materials and armouring as heavy tanks and artillery of the period. It weighs more than most cars and can severely damage whatever it walks across. Vherio's swords are less effective when using the War Avatar, as he does not have his normal level of dexterity, but the pneumatic pistons in its joints make up for that with raw strength. Vherio often carries a rocket launcher when using this avatar.

UNTIL Avatar: Vherio awaits this new avatar that UNTIL is currently building. Using bleeding edge power armour technology and ultra-light materials, the UNTIL Avatar promises a more powerful and effective Vherio than ever before... but the project is secretive and time-consuming. They are already well behind schedule.

Mask: Vherio's "Guy Fawkes" mask is made of porcelain, or painted metal in the case of his War Avatar. Emotionless, passive and threatening, the mask is arguably Vherio's greatest tool due to the reputation behind it.

Weaknesses

Magic: Magic, particularly necromancy, is Vherio's Achilles heel. He is able to destroy machines and power armour at a moment's thought, but at the same time a simple hedge wizard can best him if he is not careful. What makes magic especially dangerous to Vherio is his ignorance of both magical practice and even the metaphysics of his own form. It should be noted that one of Vherio's most hated nemeses, Monstrance, wields potent spirit magic.

Other Spirits: Vherio can posess technological entities, and dead matter, but if a spirit already inhabits something, Vherio refuses to posess or even pass through it. Likewise he will not take control of the remains of a person. This conflict of morals becomes acute when he is dealing with A.I.

Interference: The halo of radiation surrounding Vherio is more of a hindrance than a help in the modern world. He cannot use most computers, and cannot be filmed or photographed except from over 30 metres away.

Colour Blindness: Vherio uses the auras of living things to give colour and definition to his world. In a sterile environment, he's almost blind. He also cannot read text or distinguish patterns and pictures printed on a flat surface.

Anchorage: Vherio is bound to his earthly remains in the form of an urn of ashes. This is kept secure in a brass sphere in the chest cavity of whichever avatar he happens to be using. He is incapable of travelling far from his urn, and grows progressively weaker as with distance from it. Were the urn to be pierced, the effects would be disastrous for him.

Behind the Scenes

Vherio was conceptualised, created, and joined The Liberators all in the same day: the 20th February 2013. Originally there was no explanation as to what or who he was, just a mask and a fearsome reputation.

Inspiration for Vherio came primarily from underground music producer "Savant". His appearance is based off the cover art for Savant's album "The Alchemist". The technological electronic music mixed with modal chords and harpsichord fits Vherio well. Many aspects of Vherio's makeup come from other musical cues as well; namely French House, Sabaton and the band "Steam Powered Giraffe".

This is not the first character of mine to be named Vherio. Due to overlooking the first one when making the second, it's now stuck. Worse, it bears far too much resemblance to Savant's "Vario" album. If I was able, I would rename the character "Revolucion" at the nearest oppertunity, but unfortunately that seems implausible.

The character Vherio is the first successful character of mine to work solely within CO lore, without drawing on outside elements from the Forgotten Realms or BIONICLE. As a result, Vherio becomes more approachable and easier to use in-game.

Vherio uses "The Unleashed" as a class. This fits him well and I doubt that his powers would differ by much if he was freeform.

In late 2017, plagued by lawsuit troubles, the Coalition dissolved. A deal was made for PRIMUS to take the heat and clear members of civil suits so that individuals would not be affected... but the price was that the organization was to disband. The Coalition was dissolved, the facilities shut down, and the organization became defunct. The Orb of Eternity was disposed of, and the Citadel was destroyed in a controlled demolition. The Phoenix Complex itself was also similarly decommissioned and rebuilt into a new headquarters for Vlocke Aerospace Industries and Frost Futuretech.

The Liberators parted ways, but remaining friends and wishing each other luck in their future endeavors. The Phoenix went up in ash... though because PRIMUS only ordered the current members to dissolve and never reform, and not outsider non-members, the Phoenix may one day rise again from the ashes when the ban on the team name "Liberators' expires in ten years.
