EARLY LIFE

Oliver Thomas Black was born in London, England, on January 13, 1997. He lived a typical middle-class childhood in the United Kingdom, until his mutation began to reveal itself during puberty.
The first signs were easily overlooked and quickly blamed on things like puberty or the flu. Awkward moments of excessive sweating, spontaneous headaches, suddenly feeling real warm or cold. Unfortunately the fever symptoms got a lot worse and the boy was eventually hospitalized when his declining body temperature started to reach critical levels.
Despite the abnormally low body temperature, Oliver's organs continued to function. And a strange layer of frost and ice began to cover his entire body, leaving the teen with a permanently frost-shrouded appearance. They later came up with a concoction of chemicals and cryogenic liquids that allowed Oliver to return to looking like his old self again, suppressing the outward mutation by lowering his core temperature, somehow tricking his body into thinking the desired body temperature had already been reached. Unfortunately the effects of the serum are temporary and actively using his powers or being exposed to extreme heat negates the effects, quickly returning Oliver to his default mutant state again.

At the age of 16 Black filed for emancipation and moved to the United States. He ended up settling down in Millennium City, The City of the Future. Oliver initially started to fight crime simply to unwind and to help him gain a handle on his nascent abilities. But it soon became something more, using his mutant powers to help others became a way of coming to grips with his new reality.
Although he has walked the fine line between heroism and vigilantism in the past, Black Ice is on good terms with the Millennium City Police Department. Having lend his aid in the solving of numerous cases of street crime and various investigations into underworld activity. Before finishing his senior year Black had already decided he would pursue a career in crime fighting.

PERSONALITY

Oliver Black is a troubled individual, displaying at least a few character traits and patterns of behavior that correspond with his mutant appearance. While generally an amiable young man, his attitude towards others can sometimes come across as cold or distant. He is not intentionally unkind to anyone, he just does not warm up to people easily. Once he does, his loyalty is absolute.

In the field Black is able to keep a cool head by relying on scientific knowledge or rational thought. His quick thinking and common sense allow him to come up with ingenious practical solutions in the heat of the moment. Black is also known to stubbornly place the safety of others before his own wellbeing, often performing daring feats and outright reckless stunts if the situation asks for it.

Even though he is considered one of the more promising up-and-coming young heroes, already having his name attached to a brand, Black does not actively seek out the spotlight and prefers to keep to himself. He has actually gotten rather good at evading the press and he seldom agrees to do an interview, much to the frustration of his sponsors who would like nothing more than to see Oliver fully embrace his status as a minor celebrity. Instead his agent often has to deal with confused or disgruntled photographers who keep having difficulties with iced-over camera lenses.

Cryogenic Powers

Black Ice possesses the ability to create, direct and manipulate ice or any substance below its freezing point. This gives him the power to cause extreme drops in temperature, spontaneously freeze things solid and to exercise near complete control over frozen substances or ice formations. The ice created through the use of these abilities also has a slightly higher density and strength than regular, naturally formed ice crystals. Most notably the layer of crystalized ice that covers Black's own body when he is in his mutant state.

While these abilities do not require direct physical contact, using these powers over longer distances appears to be more straining and does not allow Black Ice to exercise the same level of control. It has been estimated that the subject is capable of invoking temperatures as low as several hundred degrees below Celsius when maintaining direct physical contact with his target.

Metahuman Physiology

Black Ice is able to withstand extreme weather conditions, particularly those below freezing point, and possesses physical traits that are beyond the human norm, such as heightened endurance, fortitude and stamina. As well as having an abnormally high threshold for pain. In his mutant state Black is even able to withstand a certain force of impact and pressure, rendering most regular ammunition useless against him. There is also a minor increase in muscular strength, as well as reflex, but nowhere near the point of deserving to be called superhuman qualities.

Due to the significantly reduced body temperature, Black Ice is able to bypass most forms of heat detection. It will also take much longer for many forms of poison and most viruses to take effect, especially if skin contact or ingestion is required for them to be effective. Some of these types of biochemical weaponry may not be able to bypass the subject's mutant physiology at all.

Besides standard paraphernalia, such as a comm device or a grappling hook, the subject habitually resorts to the practical use of various, often hazardous, chemicals.

Bee - A flamboyant figure whose helmet resembles a stylised bee, one of the first costumed individuals Black Ice was sighted with.

Black Knight - This veteran hero often exchanges joking comments with Oliver, typically mocking the gap between their generations.

Brimstone - A crime fighter who takes fighting crime very serious, which more than makes up for the lack of any true superpowers.

Galactigal - An alien being that is only known as a starspawn, the leader of New Vigil when Black Ice was a member of said team.

Lash - This young fashionista seems to have somewhat of a minor infatuation with Black Ice, but foremost appears to be a fierce ally.

Luctus - A previous housemate of Oliver, although fairly little is known about the mysterious meta abilities this individual possesses.

Prankenstein - A former young offender who eventually found his way back to the path of the law and managed to befriend Oliver.
