The Protectors of the World (or simply known as The Protectors) are a super group in the same vein as The Champions, a coalition of heroes who are tasked with taking on world scale events. They have a wide variety of different skill and power sets in order to deal with conflicts as they arise, from covert missions in faraway countries to large scale, earth threatening villains. They are the first line of defense whenever the stakes are high.

The roster is composed of charter members, who are permanent fixtures on the Protectors roster, as well as honorary members. Charter members are the main force of the team, each one having the ability to access the Protectors comm. Honorary members are utilized in a more support capacity, dependent upon specialization and need on any given mission. Honorary members are also not limited by their involvement in any other super group they may be established in.

History

The Protectors of the World were created when the heroine Sparrowhawk, seeking to create a more proactive strike force of seasoned heroes, came to UNTIL to request the ability and funds to go ahead with such a project. Sparrowhawk, already having connections within the organization, found this still a difficult task, but persevered. With the assistance of her partner, All-Star, the two began the arduous task of reviewing both notable and up-and-coming heroes that would mesh well both personality and power wise. Bringing in both close associates, friends and even relative strangers, they began in earnest to forge a team that would be a force to be reckoned with.

The Protectors currently have their headquarters in the upper penthouse levels of the Barlowe Building. The levels have been renovated to act as living quarters, a functional training area and meeting area. It also houses a state of the art laboratory and gymnasium. Their headquarters is also outfitted with a larger version of Sparrowhawk's 'Mother' artificial intelligence computer system as well as Portal. Portal, which is accessed via the Mother computer, creates doorways within select areas of the world that have been pre-determined and routed. Portal locales are situated across most main cities on Earth, barring a few countries that have not had previous agreements or sanctioned by UNTIL.

The Barlowe Building serves as the current headquarters for The Protectors. The building, primarily an executive hotel, has had its uppermost five stories redesigned to accommodate the super team's needs. The headquarters are run by an artificial intelligence known as 'Mother', a more intuitive version of the program used by Sparrowhawk in her costume and created by UNTIL contractor Simon Reynolds. Mother handles every day tasks as well as more specialized functions, such as controlling Portal.

The upper floors contain the following:

  • Twenty four 900 square foot residential suites. These suites are for reserved for the active charter members and constitute the lowest of the four floors that the Protectors utilize. Some are used as full time living quarters; others are used intermittently by certain members.
  • A state of the art gymnasium, pool, and recreation center. The gym caters to both human and metahuman abilities.
  • Crime lab and small medical center.
  • Meeting Room with primary computer relay and multiple holographic displays.
  • Mission Control. Usually manned by Sparrowhawk, it serves as a communications hub for all members of The Protectors. From here Sparrowhawk has full access to the Mother system and can view and receive transmission feeds, keeping both audio and visual tabs.
  • Portal. The Portal system is a large, arch like device located off the main meeting room. It is run by the Mother program. Activated by voice command, Portal sets up instantaneous teleportation to most large cities across the world. While incredibly effective at ensuring The Protectors can be first responders at most scenes, it also has the side effect to many of temporary nauseousness and dizziness.
  • Defensive and Offensive capabilities. Due to its very public location, the Barlowe is specially equipped with a number of high level capabilities to prevent attacks. In the event an attack does occur, the building has been outfitted with both offensive and defensive systems.

  • African Violet: aka Thandi Wessels. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Thandi is the descendent of a line of magic linked to ancient energies of the African continent. When her magical abilities came of age, Thandi was able to use her dark energies to assist others, and became a local hero in the Johannesburg area. Over the years, she participated in the 2004 Tsunami relief efforts and eventually was chosen to receive UNTIL training. For several years, she participated in international humanitarian efforts and UNTIL-sponsored activities. She has been a part of several international superhero groups and in 2012 was part of an UNTIL effort to repel an attack by Warlord in Okinawa. Her name was offered by UNTIL to Sparrowhawk and Thandi accepted her invitation to join the Protectors of the World.

  • All-Star: aka Nathaniel Carter was an all-star high school quarterback and small-time crook with the unique mutant ability of Hyperkinesis when he was put on death row after being framed for the murder of his fiancée by his partner-in-crime. Offered a second chance by the U.S Government, Nate was trained to be a soldier, a spy and, most importantly, a patriot. With his checkered past behind him and an exciting new future on the cards, Nate became the All-Star, a veritable one-man army and one of the greatest known marksmen alive. Despite his primary role as a freelance agent for the U.S Government, All-Star has spent much of his time working out of his comfort zone with heroes, sorcerers and aliens alike. This constant lack of consistency and a near-fatal injury caused him to reevaluate his standing in the superhero community and, with the support of his girlfriend, Sparrowhawk, prompted him to look into registering with a team of like-minded crimefighters. What All-Star wasn't expecting, however, was for his partner to spring the concept of founding their own group on him. Though All-Star isn't entirely sure what he's gotten himself into on this one, he offers Sparrowhawk his full support and does what he can to help the Protectors whenever he's available.

  • Black Sigil: aka Scott Harris. Born in Vibora but raised in Hearst City, Scott was a struggling journalist until chance caused him to take on the mantle of the original Black Sigil. Equipped with a powersuit capable of harnessing magic itself he began to fight crime as a small-time hero before the death of a friend fully committed him to heroics. Scott has since taken residence in Millennium City and become a global hero fighting for what's right. With his armor he specializes in energy manipulation and astral projection, while without it he is more-or-less an average person. Although he is still rather new to the superhero community he has adjusted quite well - recently he has even decided to join the newly formed Protectors of the World to become a greater force for good.

  • Canadian Fist:aka Dusk Vermillion. Dusk is the daughter of a former UNTIL agent, Nathaniel Vermillion. Coming to Millennium City after her powers emerged, Dusk quickly caught the attention of UNTIL and its Superhero Liasion Program. With her impressive natural command of magic and psionic abilities to further bolster her tool kit, Dusk has been relentless in fighting evil both supernatural and mundane in hopes of living up to her father's names and the high standard she tries to hold herself to. Hoping to better uphold her ideals, she joins the Protectors to fight alongside some of the world's finest. And if that happens to let her fight alongside her idol...

  • C.O.P.: aka Construct Optimized for Peacekeeping Unit 18 of 20, or simply "Mills". One of a decommissioned series of robots whose purpose was to not only to aid police forces with apprehending metahuman criminals, but apparently make said criminals regret they were ever born, Mills was made with pride in Austin, Texas by Syntha Tech Industries. Mills, like all C.O.P.s, is a fully self-aware artificial intelligence construct installed in a massive and heavily armored chassis built to withstand the worst types of punishment super villains can dish out and then return the favor with both fire power and brute strength. Mills is currently with an elite division of M.A.R.S. known as Special Unit Alpha, which defends the city from rogue A.I.'s and other dangerous synthetics. Though he is often criticized as being every bit as dangerous as the villains he was designed to fight, there's no denying his impressive service record and he always gets the job done by the book. ("The Book" is what Mills named his night stick.) At first, he scoffed at the idea of ever joining a superhero team and declined Sparrowhawk's invitation, but later changed his mind after a lengthy talk with Syntha Tech's C.E.O., who believes Mills can serve a higher purpose working with the Protectors.

  • Dobergirl: aka Sunny Oskern. Sunny is a former sidekick to veteran street level hero, Doberman! From the the small but growing city of Flatlake, Minnesota, Dobergirl is an enthusiastic, strong willed and loyal young woman with a varied and growing skill set. Though originally nothing more than an obsessed fangirl, working under Doberman she was trained in unarmed combat (mostly boxing and street fighting), the use of improvised and unorthodox weaponry and some minor detective skills. In the last few years she's further sharpened her skills, picking up a knack for common tech used by the hero community, a familiarity with high grade weaponry and advanced vehicles used by both legal and criminal organizations. In addition to these skills, Dobergirl recently became much closer to her namesake thanks to canine DNA grafts to fix genetic damage caused during her sidekick days when she was accidently struck by an experimental 'power ray' meant to give a small criminal a boost in strength. These augmentations grant her highly increased physical capabilities and senses far above those of a normal human. Hand picked by Sparrowhawk to be one of the charter members because of her potential, Dobergirl hopes she can prove that she made the right choice.

  • Howitzer: A retired veteran of the Israel Defense Force, Shira Levi brings nearly three decades of military experience to the team. Born in Jordan in 1963, she was taken from her family by the mysterious Black Sand cult and was used as one of their test subjects. Fortunately she was rescued by the efforts of Aaron Walker and the Israeli Special Forces. Inspired by the people who saved her, she later joined the service at age 18 where she remained for most of her adult life. Now older and wiser, Shira hopes to influence the new generations and, when necessary, bring her considerable destructive powers to bare when evil refuses to back down. Although Howitzer has often lead strike teams and troops in the field, she believes a younger, more energetic woman such as Alex is better suited for leadership and hopes to offer her advice when needed.

  • Katsuo: aka Hisashi Ijiri. Hisashi was born and raised in Himeiji, Japan, and was completely normal in every sense of the word. He was never a particularly driven child, but eventually came out of his shell with the urging of his elder sister, quickly becoming a fiercely determined person. As a young adult, Hisashi joined with a secretive organization to aid in the search of his sister after her sudden disappearance. Becoming wrapped in the group's antialien politics, he was eventually chosen to undergo a procedure to become something akin to a superhuman with the aid of nanobiomachinery. Hisashi was forced to become a frontline force in the group's goal to create a utopian society despite how much he hated doing so. Eventually the group fell to infighting and Hisashi disappeared in obscurity. He decided to use his powers in the hero community under the name of Katsuo instead, gaining quite a bit of fame while he operated in Japan before immigrating to United States. He's operated in quite a few places around the world, often noted as being heavily determined and straightforward. While not the most famous of heroes, Katsuo joined the Protectors due to his increasing involvement in affairs around the globe.

  • Paradigm: aka Dawn Ryan. Originally an Olympic track & field star, Dawn was chosen by the Spirit of Humanity at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Given that her newly found superpowers ended her career as an athlete, she took some time to herself before returning as the hero Paradigm in late 2002. Since then, she's served as a tireless defender of the Earth against threats both terrestrial and not. Since becoming Paradigm, she's done battle with various deadly forces; the Red Legion, the alien species known as the Crog, and perhaps most impressively, the demon lord of Sloth, Belphegor. In addition to serving with the Protectors, she occasionally works with the Star*Guard led team, Starwatch, in order to fight threats on a galactic level.

  • Riptide: aka Avakai ty'Lori. Riptide was born on the distant ocean planet Voltexi, where his father owned a vast import/export business. His future would hold something different for him, however - he signed on with the military as soon as he was of age, receiving various cybernetic augmentations and intensive training in the use of multiple deadly weapons of war. After being discharged from service when it was discovered his body was not receptive to the newest line of cybernetics, Riptide decided to take to the stars, working as a bounty hunter to help pay his way throughout the galaxy. He traveled for almost six decades before finally crashing on Earth. Now he helps the crime-fighters of the planet with his extensive knowledge of extraterrestrials and skill with weaponry, proving to be a deadly and level-headed combatant even against seemingly overwhelming odds. His normally laid-back attitude hides a far more predatory, bloodthirsty nature; Riptide only truly feels alive when he's on the battlefield. His friendship with Sparrowhawk resulted in his recruitment into the Protectors of the World, where he will continue to ply his trade.

  • Soulstar: aka Dredrick "Dread" Wilson, A cop's son and former gang banger way back in his mid teen years. After a botched heist effort at a supposedly secret military surplus base, not to mention being betrayed by fellow gang members, Dread was forced to hide away and try and make his escape on his own. Whilst in the middle of it, he stumbled across a pair of highly advanced goggles and shoes which has a primary function of unlocking an individual's own latent abilities. His just happened to be superpowers. Sometime later he left the gang land life and decided to go out to find himself a real education and life on his own. The ability he was able to unlock from the gear granted him the power to siphon energy from any source of life period. This power can be used in a multitude of ways including creating force fields, powerful energy waves, an energy aura,an healing aura, releasing energy shots, and able to boost the powers of himself and others. The limits of this power is still undergoing and hasn't been fully explored yet but it is known that the power remains even without the equipment; it's just not nearly as powerful nor effective. As SoulStar he is known to constantly make countless references to media related subjects and make colorful chatter in and outside of combat. Any talks about his past will simply be dismissed or outright avoided since he is trying to move past that. Although very much known amongst the hero community he's been rumored to be a bit more of a "lone wolf" type, but lately things are getting so big that there are just certain situations he can't ignore, thus finally deciding to step out more into the limelight.

  • Sparrowhawk: aka Alex Harper. Alex was born with a genius IQ, a talent to learn quickly as well as a hyperthymestic memory. She grew up to become one of the world's most dangerous combatants and a master in a multitude of skill sets. After traveling the globe for years as both an agent of UNTIL and the super heroine Sparrowhawk, Alex saw a need for a strong, efficient team that had a diverse array of skills to handle any number of threats posed. While never much of a 'team player', Sparrowhawk found strength through her partner All-Star to make her ideas reality. With his encouragement and support they decided to create the Protectors. Its goal was simple: an organization of highly trained heroes who would be the first line of defense to combat world crises. She currently heads the group in a 'mission control' type capacity, assigning teams for conflicts as they are needed to ensure their success. While sometimes behind the scenes, she is more than ready and capable of getting her hands dirty on the field. While Sparrowhawk can have a very direct, bossy and sometimes even rude demeanor that she continues to work on improving, she deeply cares about both the team and the ideals that they are based upon.

  • Thundrax: aka Craig Carson, Vancouver-born powerhouse whose vast strength stems from a connection to a source of primal mythological power. Adopting the costumed persona of Thundrax at the age of 14, Craig served with Vancouver's renowned SUNDER superhero team, then the Canadian Guard, then StarForce, which he led for a year prior to Justiciar taking over the team. After a six year sojourn in politics, Craig resumed his superhero career in 2009. Craig is also the head of Flux-Carson Enterprises, an energy, mining, and space development firm. Thundrax has a reputation as a highly principled, traditional superhero and has connections with nearly every major superhero and agency on the planet.

  • Zelara/Laser Knight: Zelara T'shal hails from the spacefaring Anthari race, whose homeworld was destroyed by Valak the World Ravager decades ago. While flying an experimental vessel looking for planetary settlement candidates, her ship experienced a catastrophic warp-drive malfunction and crashed on Earth, losing all hands save her. The blue-skinned extraterrestrial has pledged her life and loyalty to her adoptive homeworld, doing battle with Earth's enemies with advanced combat armor and powerful energy weapons. Though she doesn't seem much of a warrior at first glance, and indeed only possesses rudimentary combat training, she makes up for this shortcoming with powerful alien technology, a knack for reverse engineering, and a near-fanatical determination few of her opponents can match.

  • Citadel: aka Garret Brennar, an anthropomorphic mutant since the age of twelve. Supposedly born in the suburbs of Detroit, Garret had been gifted with a rapidly-expanding intellect that enabled him to pursue a Master's Degree in Applied Robotics and Cybernetics at a relatively young age, and he utilizes this intellect to craft himself a suite of personal gadgets and powered exoskeletons. Having discovered a top-secret bunker purely by accident underneath the floor of his basement apartment, Garret found a variety of abandoned tech and the plans for what he would soon dub the TITAN Power Armor. Once school was over, and his Master's Degree on hand, Garret completed his restoration project and adopted an alias as Citadel. He portrays himself as being calm, and collected, yet dives into any situation headfirst unless he knew for sure that he couldn't handle it, alone. Though still young in the meta-human scene, he is optimistic and always willing to lend a helping hand -- even if it means bashing a few heads in.

  • Grimoire: aka Moira Graves. Born in rural England, Moira is a talented and natural super-sorcerer. She's one of few that could have been a valid candidate for the position of Archmage (now filled by Caliburn), and wields the potent Ascendant Band artifacts. Moira is sworn to protect the Earth and the Prime Material from incursions both mystical and not, and possesses a formidable talent that she wields with little regret. She's acerbic and brusque, and frankly, sometimes just plain rude. She has a tendency to look down on non-mages, not out of disdain, but out of a wish to keep them away from what she considers 'her business'. Unfortunately, with rising complications around the globe, Moira was forced into a position where she needed to lend her aid to others - and so she wound up being a member of the newly founded Protectors.

  • Victory: aka Lisa Klein. Once known as the young vigilante Triage, exposure to a super serum derived from the drug Revelation caused Lisa's dormant superhuman strength and durability to manifest, turning her into the superheroine Victory. She primarily serves with the Young Renegades as both a frontline fighter and, with her extensive knowledge of biology, anatomy, and medicine, as their medic. She's young, energetic, and courageous; when there's dark forces at work, you can always count on Victory to help stand strong against it. However, between the secret behind her powers and her villainous father, the Olympian, she might have a rough future ahead of her...
